The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on that day, 36,675 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 25,838,239.
With fewer diagnostic tests conducted over the weekend, the number decreased by 4,228 compared to the previous day (40,903), but increased by 2,183 compared to a week ago on the 30th of last month (34,492). It also rose by 10,441 compared to two weeks ago on the 23rd of last month (26,234).
This is the highest number reported on a Sunday in nine weeks since September 4th (72,112).
From the 31st of last month to this day, the daily new cases were 18,504 → 58,363 → 54,737 → 46,887 → 43,449 → 40,903 → 36,675, averaging 42,788 per day.
The health authorities predict a winter resurgence as immunity formed during the Omicron wave last March wanes and new variant viruses emerge. Recently, they forecast that daily cases could reach up to 200,000 during the resurgence. The authorities plan to announce detailed winter outbreak forecasts and prevention plans on the 9th.
Among the new cases on this day, 66 were imported cases, 9 more than the previous day (57). Domestic community transmission cases numbered 36,609.

The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized increased sharply by 32 from the previous day (314) to 346.
The number of deaths due to COVID-19 reported the previous day was 18, 23 fewer than the day before (41). By age group, 14 were aged 80 or older, 3 in their 70s, and 1 in their 60s.
The cumulative death toll is 29,372, with a cumulative fatality rate of 0.11%.
