[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] Former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly made an active romantic pursuit of Princess Diana after her divorce but was rejected.
On the 4th (local time), U.S. Newsweek obtained in advance the upcoming book "The King: The Life of Charles III" by renowned biographer Christopher Anderson, scheduled for release on the 8th, and revealed this content to the public first. The author wrote that Trump "aggressively pursued" Princess Diana, who divorced Prince Charles (now King Charles III of the United Kingdom) in 1996, but was turned down. The book also includes a statement that after Diana's death, Trump said on a radio show, "If I wanted, I could have slept with Diana. But only if she had passed the HIV test." This content is mentioned in the section where Anderson writes about the relationship between Trump and King Charles III.
Newsweek reported that, separate from the biography's content, Trump made similar remarks twice on radio shows hosted by Howard Stern in 1997 and 2000. Shortly after Diana died in a car accident in Paris in 1997, Stern asked Trump, "Why do people think you are selfish for saying you could have been with Lady Di? Could it have worked out? You could have slept with her, right?" Trump replied, "I think it could have." In 2000, Stern asked the same question again, "Do you think you slept with her?" Trump answered "Without any hesitation."
There are also testimonies that Princess Diana felt uncomfortable with Trump's advances during her lifetime. Sulina Scott, a friend of Diana and a broadcaster, revealed in her 2015 book that "Diana was uncomfortable with Trump's approach." In an interview with The Sunday Times, Scott said, "Trump bombarded Diana with expensive, huge bouquets worth hundreds of pounds." According to Scott, Diana appeared worried about what to do as roses and orchids piled up in her apartment, and she even said she felt like Trump was stalking her. Scott gave a lighthearted piece of advice, saying, "Just throw them in the trash."
Before the 2016 U.S. presidential election, former President Trump was asked by a British TV reporter about his relationship with Diana. At the time, Trump responded, "That's completely false. There was one occasion in New York where everyone lined up to shake her hand, and that was the only time I met Diana." He added, "I liked and respected Diana, but I was not interested in 'that kind of relationship.'"
