Lim Suseok, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Regular Briefing on the 3rd: Response Measures to North Korea's Serial Provocations
"Closely Consulting with the US and Japan to Enhance the Effectiveness of Independent Sanctions Measures"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 3rd that it is considering additional independent sanctions in response to North Korea's successive provocations.
At the regular briefing on the same day, Deputy Spokesperson Lim mentioned that the government designated 15 North Korean individuals and 16 organizations as targets of independent sanctions last month, stating, "Since North Korea's provocations have continued even after that, we are also considering additional independent sanctions."
He emphasized, "In this review process, we are also closely consulting with allied countries including the United States and Japan on ways to enhance the effectiveness of independent sanctions measures."
Earlier, on the 14th of last month, the government added North Korean individuals and organizations involved in nuclear and missile development and sanctions evasion to the list of independent sanctions targets for the first time in five years.
Deputy Spokesperson Lim pointed out, "The government intends to actively persuade all Security Council members, including China, that a unified response by the Security Council is essential for North Korea to halt provocations and return to dialogue," adding, "The responsibility for escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula and in the region recently lies entirely with North Korea."
He added, "North Korea's attempts to obscure or shift this responsibility will never succeed."
