On that day, Mayor Park expressed deep condolences to the deceased and their bereaved families by writing in the condolence book with a heavy heart, offering a chrysanthemum flower, and observing a moment of silence.
In the condolence book, he sincerely wrote, "We will not forget your youthful sacrifice. Rest in peace."
The joint memorial altar installed in front of the provincial government office will be open until the 5th and can be visited for memorial services from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Mayor Park said, "I pray for the repose of those who lost their lives in this unfortunate accident," and added, "I also extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families who lost their precious loved ones in this unbelievable accident."
Earlier, on the 1st, Mayor Park held an emergency meeting with senior officials in the mayor’s office and instructed restraint from all public and private activities that could harm the national mourning atmosphere.
He specifically directed to refrain from group dinners, excessive drinking, and prohibited any conduct or speech that could damage the dignity of public officials or cause social disturbances.
He also ordered safety inspections of multi-use facilities such as tourist attractions and parks, as well as local facilities frequently used by residents, including village halls and senior centers.
To participate in the national mourning atmosphere, it was additionally decided to cancel or postpone all events hosted or organized by the city until the 12th, including the national mourning period.
Mayor Park stated, "We will revise the safety management manual for festivals and tourist attractions where many people gather to ensure that tragedies like the Itaewon disaster do not occur in our city."
