Police Take Measures to Prevent Further Damage by Blocking Access and Sharing URLs of Suspected Fraud Posts
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Police Agency's National Investigation Headquarters is launching a public-private joint effort to eradicate malicious fraud through data sharing with consumer-to-consumer (C2C) platform companies such as Danggeun Market, Bungaejangter, and Junggonara.
On the 1st, the police announced that they started a system on the 25th of last month that sends URLs of suspected fraudulent false posts received through the Cybercrime Reporting System (ECRM) in real time to C2C platform companies. Upon receiving the data, the C2C platform companies immediately monitor the posts and their authors. This measure aims to address cyber fraud where false posts are made to swindle money. It also prevents additional damage caused by delays in deleting or blocking false posts after harm has occurred.
This system improvement is part of activities to eradicate cyber fraud based on a memorandum of understanding signed last November between the National Police Agency, the Personal Information Protection Commission, and C2C platform companies. Through system linkage with C2C platform companies, the police deliver URLs of suspected fraudulent false posts reported to ECRM in real time, and the C2C platform companies analyze the authors’ past activity history and the authenticity of the posts to take stepwise actions such as blocking access or deleting the posts.
The National Police Agency plans to further strengthen cooperation with C2C platform companies and analyze the operational effectiveness of the newly established system. Additionally, they will expand the ‘Malicious Fraud Eradication Platform Security’ by creating a new ‘Institutional Reporting’ function in ECRM, providing a channel for C2C platform companies and related agencies to report collective or organized fraud crimes discovered during their own monitoring processes.
A National Investigation Headquarters official stated, "In the digital platform government, we will continue to make our best efforts so that the public and private sectors can share data and provide a safer cyber space for the people." A representative from a C2C platform company said, "The data provided by the police is expected to greatly assist our own monitoring of fraudulent activities," adding, "Meaningful results are anticipated, such as providing users with a safe secondhand trading ecosystem."
