[Asia Economy Reporter Inho Yoo] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 1st that it will jointly hold the 'Global Cross-Border Privacy Rules (CBPR) Forum Workshop' in Seoul for three days from the 2nd to the 4th, together with the Personal Information Protection Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce, to seek opinions on the cross-border transfer of personal information.

The workshop will be attended by nine CBPR participating countries including South Korea, Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and the United States, as well as four interested countries: the United Kingdom, Brazil, Colombia, and Bermuda. Corporate representatives will also participate to gather industry opinions.

CBPR refers to the evaluation and certification of personal information protection management systems. It consists of 50 requirements including key principles of personal information protection and ensuring security.

CBPR was discussed within the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and after the launch of the global CBPR forum last April, the first workshop was held in Hawaii, USA.

After consultations among member countries, Seoul was selected as the second host city.

At this workshop, Yoon Seong-deok, Director-General for Economic Diplomacy Coordination at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is expected to emphasize the establishment of a system for the safe and free cross-border movement of personal information in his opening remarks.
