Gwangjin Innovation Education Roundtable... What Are This Year's Strategies According to Top Admission Experts?

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) held the ‘2022 Gwangjin Innovative Education Roundtable Discussion’ on October 31, together with various educational stakeholders.

The ‘2022 Gwangjin Innovative Education Roundtable Discussion,’ held at the Gwangjin-gu Office auditorium, is a forum established to identify the interests and educational demands of students, parents, teachers, and other education participants and to gather their opinions. It has been held annually since 2017.

This year’s large-scale discussion, held for the first time in three years due to COVID-19, was attended by about 140 people, including Gwangjin-gu Mayor Kim Kyung-ho, Gang Yeon-hong, Superintendent of Seongdong-Gwangjin Education Support Office, members of the Gwangjin Innovative Education District Working Council, professional facilitators, and applicants, who exchanged opinions.

Before the discussion began, there was a moment to express condolences for the Itaewon tragedy and to wish for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Gwangjin-gu Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said, “There is a saying that ‘it takes a whole village to raise a child,’” adding, “I hope we can think together about how to raise children well and freely share opinions.”

Sixty-seven youths, 27 parents, 11 teachers, and 17 local residents who applied through prior online registration sat at round tables of 10 people each and conducted discussions with professional facilitators in groups.

In the first part, along with an introduction to the innovative education project, the results of a prior survey conducted on 905 people regarding ▲youth interests and educational demands ▲awareness and internalization plans of innovative education ▲project evaluation were shared, and related agendas were freely explored.

To enhance the substance of innovative education, discussions focused on ‘activating publicity.’ In particular, opinions were shared about ‘promotion through popular innovative projects such as classes by village instructors.’

In the second part, discussions were actively held on topics of interest such as ▲future education ▲post-COVID-19 ▲ecological transition ▲reading, academics, and career advancement ▲youth autonomous activities.

Each group presented on discussion topics such as ▲diversification of e-sports categories ▲the need for regular educational projects on climate and environment ▲experiential learning conducted with friends sharing the same career path.

The discussion concluded by integrating electronic voting to check the overall consensus vote results in real time. The first place was ‘club activities exploring restaurants where one can experience world cultures,’ and the second place was ‘mentoring projects between high school students from foreign language high schools, autonomous private high schools, specialized high schools, and middle school students.’

The district plans to use the opinions collected from this roundtable discussion as basic data to develop and solidify the Gwangjin Innovative Education District project in the future.

Gwangjin-gu Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said, “We will actively reflect the agendas discovered in the discussion in district administration,” and “We will double the education support budget during my term to make Gwangjin a happy place for children.”

“In the second year of the integrated CSAT, score differences between elective subjects continue to occur regardless of difficulty. This year’s regular admissions are also expected to see cross-application from science to humanities due to score differences between elective subjects, and humanities students applying through early admissions may face difficulties meeting the minimum CSAT grade requirements.” (Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongro Academy)

Top domestic admissions experts gathered in Seocho-gu to support students and parents who took the CSAT.

Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) will hold the ‘2023 College Entrance Regular Admissions Strategy Briefing’ on the 19th at the district office’s 2nd-floor auditorium.

The briefing will feature Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongro Academy, and Jang Moon-sung, Director of Jongro Academic Development Institute, who are the nation’s top admissions experts. They will provide a comprehensive review of the CSAT, expected university admission scores, and regular admissions strategies, attracting much interest from students and parents.

The briefing will be conducted in two parts over about two hours. In Part 1, CEO Lim Seong-ho will analyze and explain based on preliminary scoring ▲expected admission scores by university ▲expected cross-application rates between humanities and science in the second year of integrated CSAT ▲advantages and disadvantages due to score differences between subjects. In Part 2, Director Jang Moon-sung will explain ▲analysis of advantages and disadvantages reflecting subject difficulty and weighting ▲essential points to check in the 2023 admission guidelines of major universities.

On the same day, from 1 p.m., a free ‘Preliminary Scoring Consulting’ session will be held in the district office’s 5th-floor conference room for urgent consultations based on preliminary CSAT scores.

Those wishing to attend the briefing and preliminary scoring consulting can apply through the Seocho-gu Education Support Center website from the 1st to the 14th. The briefing will accept 150 participants on a first-come, first-served basis, and the consulting will accept 80 participants likewise.

Seocho-gu will also livestream the briefing on the YouTube channel ‘SeochoRunTV’ for students and parents who cannot attend in person, and will post replay videos for repeated viewing.

Afterward, Seocho-gu will operate ‘1:1 Customized Regular Admissions Consulting’ by admissions experts. This will be conducted from the 22nd to the 28th of next month at four education support centers in Bangbae, Seocho, Banpo-Jamwon, and Yangjae-Naegok districts, targeting 400 high school seniors in the area. Interested persons can apply through the Seocho-gu Education Support Center website starting on the 22nd.

Seocho-gu Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “I send encouragement and support to students who have done their best to achieve their dreams,” adding, “I hope this helps reduce students’ anxiety and concerns about the daunting college entrance process and assists them in establishing successful admission strategies.”

Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) has taken the first step toward establishing a communication system between schools and the district office to realize customized public education in the region.

Eunpyeong-gu announced that on the 26th of last month, it held the ‘Open Meeting with Schools and District Office’ (hereafter ‘Hakgu-yeol’) attended by newly appointed principals in the second half of this year.

‘Hakgu-yeol’ is a meeting designed to enhance understanding of district education policies and strengthen communication between schools and the district office. With the start of the 8th elected term, it aims to take a step closer to creating an Eunpyeong-style, demand-centered educational environment tailored to the region’s characteristics.

The meeting, themed ‘Raising the Quality of Education,’ was held on the 26th of last month at the Eunpyeong-gu Public Library Smartrium. It proceeded with a tour of the library facilities, introduction of district education projects, icebreaking activities (‘The Education I Dream of in Eunpyeong’), and discussions on school issues. The meeting provided an opportunity to deepen understanding of local education projects and freely discuss public education policies between the district office and schools.

One principal who attended said, “Since education projects differ by district office, newly appointed principals inevitably had less information about district education projects compared to other principals,” adding, “Through today’s meeting, I was able to learn about the major education projects conducted by the district office.”

Going forward, the ‘Hakgu-yeol’ meetings will be held five times from this month to early next month for the chairpersons of the operation committees of a total of 67 schools, including elementary, middle, high, and special schools in the region. The plan is to actively communicate not only with newly appointed principals who participated this time but also with all stakeholders involved in local public education.

Eunpyeong-gu Mayor Kim Mi-kyung said, “Our top goal is to leap forward as an educational city in the 8th elected term, strengthening the public education system so that children can grow up happily,” adding, “We will continue to create opportunities to communicate with schools.”

Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Soon-hee) and the Gangbuk-gu Dream Tree Nurturing Scholarship Foundation (Chairman Choi Ki-seok) will recruit the 11th class of talent scholarship students from November 2 to 15.

The Gangbuk-gu Dream Tree Nurturing Scholarship Foundation runs a scholarship program that selects and supports children with talent who cannot realize their dreams due to financial difficulties. Unlike other scholarship programs, it focuses on providing intensive support until the talent bears fruit.

This 11th class will select about six students across six fields: music, fine arts, dance, sports, theater, and academics.

Applicants must reside in Gangbuk-gu or be enrolled in daycare centers, kindergartens, or elementary, middle, or high schools located in Gangbuk-gu. However, applicants must come from low-income families with a combined household health insurance premium payment amount below 70% of the median income.

Students wishing to apply can download the application form from the Gangbuk-gu website and submit it along with a talent development plan, a recommendation letter from the school principal or the head of the kindergarten/daycare association, a portfolio, and income verification documents via email to the person in charge or directly to the Gangbuk-gu Education Support Division.

The district will select scholarship students through a two-stage process: a first document screening and a second on-site evaluation by a talent review committee composed of experts in each field. The final selection results will be announced in January next year and posted on the Gangbuk-gu website.

Selected students will receive up to 3 million KRW annually as talent development scholarships. Those who prove growth potential in annual evaluations will continue to receive support. For more details, inquiries can be made to the Gangbuk-gu Education Support Division.

Gangbuk-gu Mayor Lee Soon-hee said, “We support talented children so they do not lose hope due to financial difficulties,” adding, “Together with the foundation, we will invest generously in the growing future so that children can freely develop their talents and dreams.”

Jongno-gu successfully completed the corporate-linked creative arts education program ‘Kids Workroom: Animator Project’ in collaboration with DL E&C over September and October.

Jongno-gu’s specialized project, ‘Corporate-linked Creative Education,’ aims to provide creative education to schools using the technology and infrastructure of companies and offer students quality career exploration opportunities.

This program was provided to about 300 students from four elementary schools in the district. To this end, Jongno-gu previously signed a business agreement with DL E&C to operate a convergence creative education program combining science and art.

Students assembled moving projectors applying scientific principles and experienced how still images change into animations by utilizing the principle of image formation on screens.

The program was developed by the Daelim Cultural Foundation, established by the DL Group. It uses animations familiar to children to foster problem-solving thinking skills and received positive responses in schools.

Jongno-gu had previously signed business agreements with Hyundai Construction & Engineering, Mirae Asset Global Investments Co., Ltd., and others to operate corporate-linked creative education and has been dedicated to securing sustainability by discovering participating companies.

As a result, four companies collaborated to present high-quality convergence creative education covering the 4th industrial revolution, finance, environment, and cultural arts fields. In the second half of next year, efforts will focus on providing creative education programs for local students in partnership with Samhwa Paints.

Jongno-gu Mayor Jeong Moon-heon said, “By incorporating the expertise of local companies into education operations, we support students in having diverse career exploration opportunities beyond the curriculum,” adding, “We will continue to expand corporate-linked education projects so that our students are equipped with essential competencies for the future society and grow healthily in preparation for the 4th industrial revolution.”
