The city canceled all pre-ceremony and congratulatory performances originally scheduled in accordance with the national mourning period following the Itaewon accident in Seoul on the 29th, and all attendees observed a moment of silence to solemnly commemorate the victims.
The event was attended by Mayor Yoon Byung-tae, National Assembly member Shin Jeong-hoon, City Council Chairman Lee Sang-man, former mayors Kim Dae-dong and Lim Seong-hoon, Kim Jong-woon, chairman of the People Power Party Naju-Hwasun regional committee, Women’s University of Korea Energy University standing advisor Women-gu, provincial council members Kim Ho-jin, Lee Jae-tae, Choi Myung-soo, and city council members.
Alumni members including Kim Bo-gon, president of the Gwangju Alumni Association, Hwang Geum-hee, vice president of the Mokpo Alumni Association, Seo Gang-yeol, vice president of the Jeju Alumni Association, as well as representatives from major institutions and organizations such as veterans, social welfare, merchants’ associations, farmers, culture and arts, and journalists also attended the Citizens' Day commemorative ceremony.
This year’s Citizen Awards (categories) were presented to Oh Kyung-gyu, director of Bitgaram General Hospital (regional development), Song Jong-woon, director of Resurrection House (social welfare), and Choi Gong-seop, chairman of Nampyeong Nonghyup (industrial economy).
Oh Kyung-gyu, director of Bitgaram General Hospital, said, “With the help of citizens and Naju City, we were able to open a public postpartum care center and operate face-to-face COVID-19 treatment and inpatient wards, reducing mortality rates and assisting critically ill patients. I will deeply cherish the love and grace received from citizens and devote all efforts to live and work together with them for their benefit.”
Song Jong-woon, director of Resurrection House, said, “I want to share this honor with everyone who is still working hard in the field of social welfare. As a social welfare worker in the Naju area, I will continue to strive and work hard as a small seed for citizen welfare and welfare for the disabled.”
Choi Gong-seop, chairman of Nampyeong Nonghyup, said, “Born in a rural area, agriculture and rural life have been my entire life. Having been with Nonghyup for 50 years, I have lived together with farmers, thinking about increasing farm income and improving quality of life. Facing the era of rural aging, I will take care so that elderly living alone do not feel lonely or distressed and work to increase farmers’ income.”
Along with the Citizen Awards, the Good Deeds Award was given to Moon Man-ho of Bitgaram-dong, who has been a role model in the local community by leading sharing and good deeds, and the Filial Piety Award was presented to Lee Geun of Seongbuk-dong, who has devotedly cared for his father over 100 years old.
