The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 31st that it plans to hold the '2022 Overseas Construction and Plant Day' commemorative event on November 1 at the Construction Hall in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, in collaboration with the Overseas Construction Association, under the slogan "In the Era of Global Transformation, Overseas Construction Rises Again."
Overseas Construction and Plant Day (November 1) was designated on November 1, 1965, the date of the first overseas construction contract, to promote overseas construction and boost the pride and morale of overseas construction workers. The event started in 2005 and has been held biennially since 2006.
At the commemorative ceremony, 49 individuals who contributed to the development of overseas construction will be awarded government honors (15 people) and Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport commendations (34 people).
The highest honor, the Silver Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit, will be awarded to Lee Sang-gi, former Vice President of GS Construction, who worked on overseas sites for about 20 years and achieved multiple accomplishments, including securing the first Australian PPP project (roads connecting Melbourne North East, etc.) by a domestic construction company and constructing the main road to Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Vietnam. Vice President Lim Yong-jin of Hyundai Construction will receive the Bronze Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit, and Manager Choi Seong-hwan of Daewoo Construction will receive the Iron Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit.
Three individuals, including Vice President Lee Byung-soo of Samsung C&T Corporation, will receive the Industrial Service Medal, four individuals including Executive Director Jung Woe-hwan of Hyundai Engineering will receive the Presidential Citation, and five individuals including Manager Nam Kwan-woo of POSCO Engineering & Construction will receive the Prime Minister’s Citation.
Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Hee-ryong stated, "The government declares the era of Overseas Construction 3.0 with new goals of securing $50 billion annually in overseas construction contracts by 2027 and entering the world’s top four overseas construction powers. To secure large-scale overseas projects, we will form a 'One Team Korea' through public-private cooperation to actively support diplomacy, finance, and other areas comprehensively, and also actively support technological development in high value-added sectors."
