[Itaewon Tragedy] Joint Memorial Altars Operated in Seongbuk, Gwangjin, Yeongdeungpo, Jung-gu, and Others Seung-ro Lee, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, along with district executives and staff, visited the joint memorial altar in Seongbuk-gu on the first morning of its operation to mourn the tragic deaths of the Itaewon disaster victims.

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) will set up and operate a joint memorial altar on the lawn in front of the district office from the 31st to mourn the tragic deaths of the victims of the Itaewon disaster.


The Seongbuk-gu joint memorial altar will be open for six days from that day until November 5, the national mourning period designated by the government, and anyone can pay respects to the victims of the disaster daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mayor Lee Seung-ro of Seongbuk-gu, along with district executives and staff, visited the altar on the first day of operation to pay tribute.


In addition, Seongbuk-gu office and its affiliated investment institutions will fly flags at half-mast until November 5.


Earlier, Seongbuk-gu held an emergency countermeasure meeting related to the Itaewon accident on the morning of the 30th. The meeting was attended by Lee Seung-ro, head of Seongbuk-gu Disaster and Safety Headquarters, and all executives at the level of section chief or higher.


Through this meeting, a comprehensive plan to support accident recovery was established, and emergency duty for executives at the director level and above began. The district also actively cooperated with Seongbuk Police Station and Jongam Police Station for the prompt identification of the deceased, and decided to closely communicate and actively cooperate with Seoul City to prevent further damage and ensure smooth accident recovery.


Furthermore, planned festivals and events within Seongbuk-gu were fully reviewed, and postponement or cancellation was requested to the relevant departments where possible.


Additionally, a thorough safety inspection of slopes, aging facilities, multi-use facilities, fire-vulnerable facilities, and facilities for the elderly and children will be conducted, and additional safety patrols will be strengthened.


Seongbuk-gu is also actively providing information on how to report missing persons related to the Itaewon accident through its website and safety text messages.


Lee Seung-ro, head of Seongbuk-gu Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, said, “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. At this time, we must focus as much as possible on accident recovery, so Seongbuk-gu will closely monitor the situation and cooperate closely with the control tower to support all available resources and do our best for swift accident recovery.”

Mayor Kim Kyung-ho and district executives and staff visited the altar on the first day of operation to pay tribute.


The Gwangjin-gu joint memorial altar will operate until November 5, the national mourning period, and visitors can pay respects from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.


Civil servants are stationed at the altar to guide mourners in incense offering and flower tribute, and visitors can offer chrysanthemums placed at the altar.


So far, there have been no casualties among Gwangjin-gu residents, but plans are in place to support residents who have become bereaved families.


All scheduled events will be postponed or canceled for the time being during the mourning period, and all staff will wear ribbons expressing mourning.


Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said, “We express sorrow and condolences to the victims and deep sympathy to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones,” adding, “We will do our utmost to prepare countermeasures and prevent safety accidents so that such tragedies never happen again.”

Choi Ho-kwon, mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, paid respects with executives at the joint memorial altar for the victims of the Itaewon disaster set up in front of the main building of the district office on the morning of the 31st.


The altar will operate until November 5, the national mourning period, and anyone can visit from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. to pay respects to the victims.


Right after paying respects, Mayor Choi Ho-kwon held a meeting with directors and urged vigilance activities to prevent various accidents, saying, “Civil servants must do their best to protect the lives and property of residents with the belief that they are the last bastion of public safety.”

Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) set up a memorial altar in the plaza in front of the district office to mourn the victims of the Itaewon accident.


The Jung-gu altar began operation from the afternoon of the 31st and will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. until November 5, the national mourning period declared by the government. Anyone can pay respects.


Regarding the Itaewon accident, Jung-gu held an emergency countermeasure meeting at 9 a.m. on the 30th to assess the damage to residents and discuss safety measures. Residents were guided via emergency texts and SNS to report missing persons or casualties directly to the mayor’s direct text.


The district decided to strengthen safety inspections and patrols in crowded areas such as Euljiro and Myeongdong and canceled the Halloween event in Euljiro Nogari Alley scheduled until the 31st. All events scheduled for November will be thoroughly checked for safety before deciding whether to proceed.


It is understood that three Jung-gu residents were among the victims. The district formed a bereaved family support team to provide one-on-one support and is reviewing various support measures including funeral assistance.


Mayor Kim Gil-seong said, “We are deeply saddened and extend our sincere condolences and sympathy to the victims,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure the safety of residents so that such tragic accidents do not recur.”

Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Seong-heon) will open joint memorial altars from October 31 to November 5 on the first-floor lobby of the district office (248 Yeonhui-ro) and in front of Sinchon Parang Whale (19 Yonsei-ro 5na-gil) for citizens to mourn and pay tribute to the victims of the Itaewon disaster.


Operating hours are from 8 a.m. daily, until 10 p.m. at the district office and until 9 p.m. in front of Sinchon Parang Whale.


The altars will have chrysanthemums for expressing condolences, and district office staff and volunteers will guide visitors to ensure their comfort.


Mayor Lee Seong-heon visited the altar with senior staff on the morning of the 31st to offer flowers and silent prayers in memory of the victims.


He also chaired consecutive meetings on the 30th and 31st, instructing, “Ensure that there is no inconvenience to the bereaved families of the deceased in the region through one-on-one matching and active support by civil servants.”


He emphasized, “Resident safety is the most fundamental element of local government existence. Please be public officials who prioritize safety measures in all tasks, events, and projects and remain faithful to the basics.”


Seodaemun-gu decided to cancel or postpone festivals and event projects for the time being, and all employees will wear mourning ribbons while on duty.

The district joint memorial altar will operate for six days from the 31st until November 5, the national mourning period designated by the government, daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and anyone can pay respects.


At 9 a.m. on the 31st, Mayor Lee Pil-hyung and district executives and staff visited the altar to mourn the victims.


Along with this, Dongdaemun-gu Office and affiliated investment institutions will fly flags at half-mast until November 5. Earlier, the district held an emergency countermeasure meeting related to the Itaewon accident at noon on the 30th. The meeting was attended by Lee Pil-hyung, head of Dongdaemun-gu Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, and related department executives to establish a comprehensive plan for supporting bereaved families and accident recovery.


Based on this, as of 9 a.m. on the 31st, the district will focus support on the families of five deceased Dongdaemun-gu residents. District staff will be assigned one-on-one to the bereaved families to identify necessary measures and provide thorough support.


Furthermore, the district decided to closely communicate and actively cooperate with Seoul City to prevent further damage and ensure smooth accident recovery, and to postpone or cancel festivals and events in the region.

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-soo) announced on the 31st that it will set up and operate a joint memorial altar to mourn the victims who tragically lost their lives in the Itaewon accident.


The Mapo-gu joint memorial altars are set up in two locations: the plaza in front of Mapo-gu Office and Hongdae Festival Street (71 Eoulmadang-ro), operating for six days from October 31 to November 5, the national mourning period. Anyone can pay respects daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.


The altars provide chrysanthemums for expressing condolences, and district staff guide visitors to ensure their comfort.


On the first day of operation at noon on the 31st, Mayor Park Kang-soo visited the altar set up on Hongdae Festival Street with related organizations, merchant associations, and residents to offer flowers and silent prayers in memory of the victims.


Upon the report of the Itaewon accident on the 30th, the district immediately held an emergency meeting chaired by the mayor and canceled the scheduled Hongdae Halloween festival. To prepare for crowds gathering in the Hongdae area, voluntary business closures were recommended to Hongdae merchants. Also, from 8 p.m. on the 30th, about 200 district staff were deployed to conduct special on-site guidance to maintain safety in the Hongdae area during late hours. The district plans to continue safety inspections and guidance in crowded areas through continuous cooperation with related institutions.


Furthermore, Mapo-gu decided to cancel or postpone festivals and event projects for the time being, fly flags at half-mast at the district office and community centers, and all staff will wear black ribbons and establish strict discipline.


Mayor Park Kang-soo said, “With a heavy heart, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured,” adding, “We will mobilize all administrative power to prepare measures for resident safety so that such tragic disasters do not recur.”

Kim Tae-woo, mayor of Gangseo-gu, Seoul, visited the ‘Itaewon Accident Victims Joint Memorial Altar’ set up in the front yard of Gangseo-gu Office on the morning of the 31st to pay respects.


The district set up a joint memorial altar in front of the district office and hung a large memorial banner on the outer wall of the office building to mourn the victims who tragically lost their lives in the Itaewon accident.


The Gangseo-gu joint memorial altar will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. from that day until November 5, and any citizen can pay respects to the victims.


Also, in line with the national mourning period, flags at half-mast are flown at the district office and community centers, and all staff wear mourning ribbons.


Mayor Kim said, “It is a very tragic situation. An unthinkable tragedy has occurred,” and expressed deep condolences and sympathy to the victims and their families of the Itaewon accident.


He added, “We will mobilize all administrative power to ensure no negligence in supporting the bereaved families and the injured, and we will re-conduct safety inspections of slopes, aging facilities, and multi-use facilities in the region to prevent accidents so that such tragic situations do not recur.”


Earlier, Mayor Kim visited the ‘Itaewon Accident Victims Funeral Hall’ set up at Ewha Seoul Hospital, a local medical institution, at 9 p.m. the previous day to pray for the deceased and comfort the bereaved families.

Considering the solemn situation of the national mourning period, the district decided to cancel or postpone all scheduled festivals and events for the time being and to promote support measures such as medical and funeral expenses.


Mayor Lee also urged thorough and flawless safety inspections and the establishment of comprehensive plans for events hosted by the district.


Additionally, the district set up a joint memorial altar in the district office lobby (1st floor) and began operation from 10 a.m. on the 31st. The altar will operate for six days until November 5, and anyone can pay respects to the victims daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. After the meeting, Mayor Lee and district executives and staff visited the altar on the first day of operation to pay tribute.


Mayor Lee Ki-jae said, “I extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to the victims and their families of the Itaewon accident and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured,” adding, “We will focus administrative power on preparing measures to protect residents’ safety so that such tragic disasters never happen again.”
