Pohang City Officially Begins Designation of 'National Advanced Strategic Industry Secondary Battery Specialized Complex'

Kickoff Meeting for Sector-Specific Task Forces on Proactive Response to Secondary Battery Specialized Complex Designation

High Possibility of Top-Level Competitiveness Designation for Secondary Battery Comprehensive Management Center and POSTECH

Pohang City has officially begun the designation of the National Advanced Strategic Industry Secondary Battery Specialized Complex.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] On the 28th, Pohang City held a practical TF Kick-off meeting in the city hall's medium conference room to designate a secondary battery specialized complex in accordance with the enforcement of the "Special Measures Act on Strengthening and Protecting National Advanced Strategic Industry Competitiveness."

Before launching an innovation governance based on industry-academia-research-government cooperation, the city is proactively responding by forming sector-specific working councils to designate the secondary battery specialized complex.

As the city selected the designation of the secondary battery specialized complex as the top priority task to diversify the industrial structure centered on the steel industry and secure new innovative growth engines, it formed a practical TF for the designation of the secondary battery specialized complex with about 10 external experts including the Secondary Battery Comprehensive Management Center, POSTECH, Handong University, Pohang Technopark, Pohang Metal Material Industry Promotion Agency (POMIA), Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (RIST), Korea Institute of Robot and Convergence (KIRO), and EcoPro.

At the meeting, detailed promotion strategies for the designation of the secondary battery specialized complex were established, and it was decided to hold regular meetings once a month to continuously discuss the preparation of a development plan for the specialized complex designation.

Kim Shin, Head of the Investment Enterprise Support Division, said, “Pohang is the optimal region for the designation of the secondary battery specialized area as it hosts businesses such as EcoPro, POSCO Chemical, and GS Construction, and has abundant human resources and world-class research capabilities including POSTECH, Handong University, accelerator research institutes, Nano Convergence Technology Institute, POMIA, RIST, and KIRO,” adding, “I ask the practical TF to work hard so that the designation of the secondary battery specialized complex can proceed smoothly.”

Going forward, Pohang City plans to devote all efforts to the designation of the Pohang secondary battery specialized complex to pioneer new paths out of the regional industrial crisis and secure national competitiveness, in cooperation with Gyeongbuk Province, by launching the secondary battery industry-academia-research-government innovation governance, hosting international conferences, and holding the Gyeongbuk Science and Technology Forum.
