Gim Gyeong-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, Achieves 'First Major Accomplishment'... Is This the Renaissance of Gwangjin-gu's Development?

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu (photo), is receiving positive evaluations for a good start, achieving significant local development accomplishments just four months after taking office, fulfilling his key campaign promises.

Since his inauguration, Mayor Kim has set two pillars for district administration: ‘comprehensive urban planning overhaul’ and ‘fair and transparent civil complaint resolution,’ both based on ‘communication’ to meet residents’ expectations for change and development.

This reflects his commitment to constant close communication, urban development, and creating a happy city. In particular, he is recognized for laying the foundation for change and progress to bring Gwangjin closer to what its residents desire.

As a result of these efforts, Mayor Kim’s ‘Achievement No. 1’ has already been realized.

Visible outcomes are emerging in urban development, a key focus of the 8th elected term.

On the 26th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government approved the district unit plan amendment, expanding the commercial area around Gunja Station, marking the first success in urban restructuring through commercial area expansion, a core project of the 8th term.

Mayor Kim evaluated, “The approval is a valuable achievement made possible by the support of residents eager for urban development and relentless efforts to make up for delayed regional progress.”

Additionally, on the 21st, Jayang 4-dong 12-10 area was selected in the Seoul Moa Town contest targeting low-rise residential areas where large-scale redevelopment is difficult, officially kickstarting urban development in Gwangjin-gu.

Mayor Kim voluntarily joined the Seoul Metropolitan Urban Planning Committee to contribute to local development.

Alongside this, a U-turn lane was newly installed from the rear gate of Children’s Grand Park toward Gunja Bridge at the Gunja Station intersection.

This improvement resolved the inconvenience of no U-turns between the rear gate of Children’s Grand Park and Gunja Station intersection, facilitating easier access for vehicles from the north side of Yongmasan-ro and east side of Cheonho-daero to Neungdong, solving a chronic traffic complaint that had lasted 13 years.

Such good results shortly after Mayor Kim’s inauguration are attributed primarily to his passion for work and his unity with the staff.

Mayor Kim, a former administrative exam passer and Seoul City Planning Department official, is regarded as a public servant who “does not lose to anyone in work.”

Reflecting this character, from his inauguration ceremony, Mayor Kim declared himself the ‘Gwangjin-gu servant,’ pledging to faithfully serve the residents.

In particular, Mayor Kim values communication with staff highly and treats them with humility, leading to an overwhelmingly positive atmosphere in the district office.

A Gwangjin-gu employee said, “Since Mayor Kim Kyung-ho, a former public official, took office, the atmosphere at the district office has improved so much that it feels good to work.”

Accordingly, attention is focused on whether this will usher in a new renaissance for the development of Gwangjin-gu.
