[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the 27th at 3 p.m., Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, attended the completion ceremony of Suraksan Sports Town held at Suraksan Sports Town in Sanggye 5-dong.
Suraksan Sports Town, with a total project cost of 44 billion KRW, spans approximately 30,000 square meters and consists of various sports facilities, offices, shower rooms, changing rooms, and a management building.
It features one baseball field, one soccer field, and three tennis courts including soft tennis courts built to international competition standards, with lighting towers installed to allow games to be held at night.
About 300 people attended the completion ceremony, including Mayor Oh Seung-rok, the chairperson of the district council, members of the National Assembly, city council members, sports officials, and local residents. The event proceeded in the order of opening and national anthem, introduction of guests, progress report, presentation of plaques of appreciation to contributors, greetings, congratulatory speeches, a completion commemorative performance, and a facility tour.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “We have transformed a place that was filled with illegal buildings and waste into a leisure space that all residents can enjoy,” adding, “We will continue to expand public sports facilities by district to promote community sports and realize a vibrant and healthy Nowon.”
Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo-gu, Seoul, gave a special lecture on integrity for public officials at the Gangseo-gu Community Center on the morning of the 27th.
Mayor Kim Tae-woo, along with senior officials and staff, united in the belief that the future development of Gangseo lies in building an anti-corruption and integrity-based Gangseo-gu founded on strict public service discipline.
In this special lecture, designed to establish a culture of integrity starting with senior officials leading by example and to instill the ethical and public service values required of leaders, Mayor Kim emphasized, “When senior officials lead by example, a culture of integrity will take root within the organization,” urging, “I ask senior officials to take the lead in practicing integrity to actively meet the expectations of residents who desire a clean administration.”
He particularly stressed, “All corruption begins with unfair personnel appointments and a flawed culture of bribery,” adding, “As the time for performance evaluations (Geun-pyeong) approaches, corruption and bribery that arise under the pretext of personnel authority, such as personnel requests, must be eradicated.”
He continued, “A paradigm shift in awareness is necessary to establish a proper organizational culture. All members must strengthen their own commitment to practicing integrity,” pointing out the need to eliminate the distorted bribery culture and uphold the ‘line of conscience.’
After the lecture, a session on whistleblowing was held. Lee Ji-moon, Chairman of the Korea Integrity Movement Headquarters (former Seoul City Council member), was invited as a guest lecturer and gave an in-depth lecture on the Public Interest Whistleblower Protection Act and the Anti-Graft Act to establish public service ethics.
Mayor Kim Tae-woo declared, “Starting with myself as mayor, I will practice integrity and anti-corruption,” and pledged, “We will thoroughly reform bad practices and further strengthen transparency in personnel affairs to ensure fair appointments.”
He added, “Only when strict public service discipline is maintained as the basis for work can the future development of Gangseo-gu, desired by all residents, be possible.”
Meanwhile, the district has been making multifaceted and continuous efforts to improve Gangseo-gu’s integrity level, which has remained at grade 3 for the past seven years, including ▲Integrity practice agreements between labor and management ▲Operation of an Integrity Task Force and issuance of integrity advisories ▲Expansion of rewards for citizens reporting irregularities.
Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo-gu, visited the ‘19th Mapo Food Culture Festival’ held over two days on the 27th and 28th in the Yonggang-dong area of Mapo-gu.
Celebrating its 19th year, the ‘Mapo Food Culture Festival’ has established itself as a representative festival of Mapo, full of food, sights, and entertainment, introducing Mapo’s food culture to tourists and local residents alike.
Mayor Park Kang-soo said, “The Yonggang-dong area, famous for Mapo Galbi and Jumulreok, is a place loved by people of all ages and is a place I often visit intentionally,” adding, “On a cool autumn evening, I hope you come to the Mapo Food Culture Festival with your colleagues and family to enjoy delicious food and make wonderful memories.”
Lee Ki-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, participated in the ‘END Violence’ campaign to eradicate child abuse on the 27th.
The child abuse eradication campaign is a global awareness initiative jointly hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Korea Committee for UNICEF to eliminate physical and mental violence against children and adolescents. It has been ongoing since July 1st in a relay challenge format.
This campaign carries the message, under the slogan ‘Take action, stop violence,’ that stopping violence requires our attention so that not a single child is left behind and all can move toward a healthy and happy future.
Mayor Lee Ki-jae emphasized that the start of a happy future for children is the eradication of child abuse, stating, “We will continue to build a dense child protection network to ensure all children are safe from violence and discrimination, making Yangcheon-gu a warm child-friendly city.”
He expressed gratitude to Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, and Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo-gu, for enabling his participation in this meaningful event and recommended Park Hee-jo, Mayor of Dong-gu, Daejeon, as the next participant.
Kim Gil-sung, Mayor of Jung-gu, Seoul, attended the 30th Peaceful Unification Prayer Namsan Bonfire Ceremony held at Namsan Bongsudae with 1,000 residents on the afternoon of the 26th from 5 p.m.
Mayor Kim Gil-sung of Jung-gu and Shin Jin-ho, Chairman of the Democratic Peaceful Unification Advisory Council Jung-gu Committee, conducted the 30th high-level prayer for peaceful unification toward North Korea, then lit the bonfire together with guests.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, attended the completion ceremony of the Cheongpa-dong 2nd Annex on the 26th.
The building is an old structure that had been completed 36 years ago. About 800 million KRW was invested, and construction was carried out over five months from June to October 2022.
Through this construction, the district completed seismic reinforcement, exterior maintenance, energy efficiency improvements using insulation materials, and indoor air quality improvements through heating and cooling air conditioning systems.
The space houses offices of existing resident organizations such as the Yongsan-gu Council for the Movement for a Better Life, the Yongsan-gu Branch of the Korea Freedom Federation, the Korea Yongsan Cultural and Arts Association, the Seoul Metropolitan City Siwoo Association Yongsan Branch, and a break room for sanitation workers.
Mayor Park Hee-young, attending the completion ceremony, said, “I am relieved that the resident organizations can use the space in a safer and more comfortable environment,” adding, “We will continue to spare no support for residents’ safety.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Park Hee-young will visit 16 neighborhoods from October 24 to November 7 to collect vivid opinions from residents on local issues, marking 100 days since his inauguration.
Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) held a graduation ceremony for the ‘Senior YouTuber School’ at the Jungnang Media Center on the afternoon of the 26th.
The Senior YouTuber School is a program operated by the Jungnang Media Center targeting those aged 50 and above in line with the era of one-person media. Its goal is to nurture senior YouTube creators to promote the local area and enable them to actively continue their activities as creators after graduation.
Ten students from the 1st and 2nd classes gathered for the graduation ceremony. The average age of the students was 64, and all participated enthusiastically in all processes from video content planning to shooting and editing. The ceremony included viewing students’ works, awarding certificates, and commemorative photos.
One of the first batch students, Mr. Bae, said, “After retirement, I spent time idly, but attending classes at the center filled my heart with excitement. The media center is a place that makes you dream,” sharing his thoughts.
Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi of Jungnang-gu said, “I hope the senior residents, who are expanding their roles from consumers to producers of various media content, can open a vibrant second chapter of life with what they learned at the YouTuber School,” adding, “We will continue to make efforts so that residents of various age groups can enhance their media capabilities at the Jungnang Media Center.”
Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, attended the opening ceremony of the ‘Cheonho Active Senior Job Sharing Center’ on the 24th.
The district has been working to create a hub space for senior jobs by selecting a location with good accessibility near Cheonho Station, where the elderly population is high. The ‘Cheonho Active Senior Job Sharing Center’ project was promoted to more smoothly distribute various customized jobs for seniors in the area by relocating and expanding the existing ‘Gangdong Senior Club’ from Gildong to this location.
The previously established Gangdong Senior Club serves as a dedicated institution for senior jobs, developing and linking jobs to help seniors lead more active lives.
Especially, the newly created ‘Gangdong Senior Counseling Cafe 6th Branch’ on the first floor will be used as a space where senior baristas can earn income and dream of a vibrant old age.
Mayor Lee Soo-hee of Gangdong-gu said, “Through the opening of the Cheonho Active Senior Job Sharing Center, I hope this place will be activated as a hub for senior job projects and serve as a space for communication and meetings for seniors in the region.”
Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) conducted an education session titled ‘Digital Literacy to Improve Work and Life Quality’ for its employees on the 18th.
This training was organized to help Nowon-gu employees flexibly respond to complex and diverse administrative demands and adapt to a future-oriented administrative environment.
About 100 employees attended the session, where consultant Jo Eun-joo (current CEO of Mariweb), who works as a professional instructor for Naver, took the podium.
Consultant Jo Eun-joo delivered a one-hour lecture covering topics such as ▲How to use images quickly and easily ▲How to utilize high-quality voice like a professional narrator ▲AI stenographer that converts meeting and lecture recordings into text ▲Planning methods using digital technology ▲Big data utilization ▲Browser usage.
Employees who participated expressed satisfaction with the training, saying it was beneficial to learn how to interpret data quickly and easily and how to apply the latest programs to their actual work.
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “In the rapidly changing digital era, developing the capabilities of frontline employees is essential to provide better administrative services to residents,” adding, “We will continue to operate various educational programs to help strengthen employees’ competencies.”
