[Gochang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk announced on the 27th that it will operate the Gochang Mudflat School birdwatching program starting next month to promote the value of the Gochang Mudflat, a World Natural Heritage site, and to raise awareness of migratory bird conservation in the Gochang Mudflat.
This birdwatching program, operated by the Ramsar Gochang Mudflat Center, will be held a total of five times: twice for families and three times for adults, recruiting 20 to 30 participants each session.
Participants will first learn to identify birds visiting the Gochang Mudflat through expert lectures, then engage in field classes where they will go out to the mudflat to observe birds using binoculars and field scopes.
For adult courses, in addition to birdwatching lessons, various classes such as ‘How to Take Proper Bird Photos’ and ‘Create My Bird Character’ are prepared to attract participants' interest.
The Gochang Mudflat’s sedimentation patterns dynamically change seasonally, including tidal flats composed of silt, mixed mudflats, and sandy mudflats.
Extensive sheniers?hills formed along the coast by accumulated sand or seashells?serve as habitats for various halophytic plants and migratory birds.
It is known that over 90 species of waterbirds visit the Gochang Mudflat annually, including sandpipers, black-faced spoonbills, black-headed gulls, storks, and egrets.
A county official stated, “We will continue to protect the Gochang Mudflat in cooperation with local residents through various programs so that more marine flora, fauna, and migratory birds can visit the Gochang Mudflat in the future.”
