[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, conducted an on-site inspection of the safety conditions of the sewage box and stormwater pump station retention basin located in Hwikyung-dong on the 24th.

The sewage box and stormwater pump station retention basin are facilities that collect rainwater and discharge it into streams during rainfall. They are key facilities to prevent flooding damage in low-lying areas, especially during heavy rains like this year.

Mayor Lee Pil-hyung also participated in the inspection that day. After putting on inspection equipment, he carefully checked for any defects or damages in the sewage box and Hwikyung stormwater pump station retention basin.

The district has been conducting thorough facility inspections regularly to prepare for heavy rain and has maintained vigilance. Thanks to these efforts, even amid record-breaking heavy rains in Seoul?the heaviest in 115 years?during the flood disaster safety headquarters operation period (May 15 to October 15), the district was able to conclude without major damage.

Mayor Lee Pil-hyung of Dongdaemun-gu stated, “We will continue to create a safe and livable Dongdaemun-gu free from flood worries through thorough preparation and proactive response.”

Lee Soo-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, announced on the 24th that she visited Amsa 2-dong and participated in the ‘Gangdong Clean Day’ event, where residents cleaned trash along main roads and side streets in the area.

‘Gangdong Clean Day’ is designated as the fourth Thursday of every month, encouraging residents’ voluntary participation to clean vulnerable areas such as side streets and back alleys.

Due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the ‘Gangdong Clean Day with Residents’ had been suspended but resumed in July this year. Starting in October, the event day was changed from Wednesday to Thursday and is autonomously operated according to the characteristics of each neighborhood.

The district expects the Clean Day events to foster a pleasant and safe urban environment around neighborhoods and encourage residents’ participation.

Yongsan-gu (Mayor Park Hee-young) is holding the ‘Apartment Empathy Sharing Festival’ at six apartment complexes in the area. This is part of the apartment community revitalization project aimed at creating opportunities for communication and harmony among residents.

In the 2022 apartment community revitalization project supported by the district, six complexes across four neighborhoods are participating. Among them, five complexes will hold music concerts and various children’s experience events at designated locations within each complex.

Starting with the first event on the 21st at Yongsan Lotte Castle Center Foret (Hyochang-dong), events are scheduled as follows: October 27 at Raemian Chellitus (Ichon 1-dong), October 28 at Yongsan Prugio Summit (Hangangno-dong), November 3 at Wanggung Apartment (Ichon 1-dong), November 11 at Yongsan KCC Switzen (Hyochang-dong), and November 17 at Hannam The Hill (Hannam-dong).

Mayor Park Hee-young, who attended the concert, said, “This meaningful event was prepared through cooperation among the district, community revitalization organizations, resident representative meetings, and residents. We hope everyone participates in the unique programs of each complex and takes the time to communicate openly with neighbors.”

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, attended the ‘Nowon-gu Mayor’s Cup Park Golf Tournament’ held at Nowon Park Golf Course at 10 a.m. on the 24th.

About 135 participants competed in men’s and women’s individual and team events. The event proceeded in the order of opening declaration, introduction of guests, award ceremony, opening and congratulatory speeches, player oath, commemorative photo, and ceremonial pitch.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We will actively support healthy leisure activities and the promotion of community sports for residents. I hope park golf becomes a time for both body and mind to become healthy.”

Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo-gu, attended the opening ceremony of the ‘Gangseo Calligraphers Association Exhibition’ held at Gangseo Cultural Center at 5 p.m. on the 24th, encouraging local cultural artists and appreciating the exhibited works.

The 21st ‘Gangseo Calligraphers Association Exhibition’ was held with the attendance of Mayor Kim Tae-woo, Hong Hyun-sook, President of the Gangseo Calligraphers Association, and Kim Jin-ho, Director of Gangseo Cultural Center.

This exhibition features over 110 works by members of the Gangseo Calligraphers Association, including Korean calligraphy, Chinese calligraphy, literary paintings, and works with letters and drawings on eco-bags.

The Gangseo Calligraphers Association Exhibition will be held until the 29th in the first-floor exhibition hall of Gangseo Cultural Center. Admission is free for everyone.

Mayor Kim Tae-woo said, “Calligraphy is a traditional art that has been part of our history for a long time and has contributed to enhancing the cultural and artistic dignity of Gangseo-gu, where traditional culture breathes. The district will continue to support local cultural artists’ creative activities and will not spare interest and support for the development of local culture and arts.”

The 2022 Dongdaemun-gu Innovation Education District Festival, held on the 22nd at the outdoor stage of Baebongsan Neighborhood Park in Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung), concluded successfully.

The 2022 Dongdaemun-gu Innovation Education District Festival was co-hosted by Dongdaemun-gu and the Seoul Metropolitan Eastern Education Support Office, with participation from various local institutions, organizations, children and youth, parents, and residents, forming a diverse local network.

At the festival, more than 20 experience booths were operated, including school club activities, play and board games, sports (basketball), reading, 4th industrial and science experiences, English experiences, crafts and ecology, and disability awareness improvement. Each booth received great responses, with some closing early due to high visitor participation. The experience booth stamp tour, where visitors collected nine stamps to receive souvenirs, was also well received.

The performance stage, which attracted attention from rehearsals, was also completed with overwhelming support. Children and youth participating in the Dongdaemun Innovation Education District project took the stage to showcase their honed skills, captivating the audience.

A youth who participated in the experience booths said, “The performance was enjoyable, but I was also very happy to try various experience activities. I’m glad I could do things I usually don’t get to do and receive souvenirs.”
