[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] A problem occurred where some subscribers of Samchully City Gas using KakaoPay's automatic gas bill payment service were charged twice.
According to Samchully on the 23rd, an error occurred where some users who pay their city gas bills through KakaoPay's automatic payment service were charged once each on the 21st and 22nd, resulting in a total of two payments. It is estimated that about 10,000 to 20,000 users were double charged.
The company stated that while the KakaoPay payment error might have been influenced by the Kakao service outage caused by a data center fire on the 15th, the preliminary investigation concluded that the cause was due to a server issue on Samchully's side. They also reported that all duplicated payments were refunded by the previous evening.
KakaoPay introduced the automatic payment feature in 2018 for its mobile billing and payment service, 'KakaoPay Bill,' initially providing the service to Samchully City Gas subscribers.
Currently, various city gas suppliers such as Gidulrami Energy, Gyeongnam Energy, and MiraeN Seohae Energy are utilizing KakaoPay's bill payment service.
