"Experts Mobilized"… US NASA to Reveal UFO Identity by Next Year [Reading Science]

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States has completed the formation of a UFO investigation team composed of world-renowned experts from various fields and is beginning nine months of activities. A report is expected to be released around mid-next year, drawing attention to whether it will reveal the long-mysterious identity of UFOs.

On the 21st (Eastern Time, USA), NASA announced that it has completed the formation of an investigation team to identify the nature of UFOs and other Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) and is starting full-scale activities for nine months. The analysis targets are non-classified materials excluding militarily sensitive data, and NASA's Science Mission Directorate (SMD) oversees the project. The research will be led by David Spergel, former chair of the Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University. Daniel Evans, Deputy Director of SMD, will coordinate work between NASA and the investigation team. The investigation will proceed for about nine months starting from the 24th of this month, with a budget of $100,000.

On this day, NASA also disclosed the list of 16 team members composed of experts from various fields. The team includes former astronauts, astronomers, oceanographers, computer scientists, and journalists. The following are the members of the UAP investigation team announced by NASA.

▲ Anamaria Berea, Professor of Computer Science and Data at George Mason University ▲ Federica Bianco, Professor of Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Delaware ▲ Paula Bondempi, Dean of the Graduate School of Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island ▲ Reggie Brothers, Co-CEO of AE Industrial Partners ▲ Jen Buss, Director of the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies ▲ Mike Gold, Vice President of Civil Space & Affairs ▲ David Greenspan, Senior Scientist at the Planetary Science Institute ▲ Scott Kelly, Former NASA Astronaut ▲ Matt Mountain, Chair of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) ▲ Warren Randolph, Deputy Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ▲ Walter Scott, Vice President of Maxar Technologies, a satellite information company ▲ Joshua Semeter, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Space Physics Center at Boston University ▲ Carlin Toner, Acting Deputy Director of FAA’s Office of Aviation Policy and Planning ▲ Shelly Wright, Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of California

NASA stated, "We have gathered the world's top scientists, data and artificial intelligence experts, and aviation safety specialists. They will provide us with professional analysis results on UAP." It added, "The investigation will be completed and results announced by mid-next year." Through this research, NASA plans to investigate whether UFOs or UAPs are simply misidentified natural phenomena or advanced aircraft developed by other countries such as Russia or China.

The United States had previously dismissed UFO sightings, including the Roswell incident, as conspiracy theories and did not respond at the national level. However, the situation changed after The New York Times broke a scoop in December 2017, revealing footage of a UFO filmed by a U.S. Navy fighter pilot in 2004. In 2019, the U.S. Congress passed a bill mandating government-level investigations and report submissions, and in 2021, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) released the first official report acknowledging the existence of UFOs as "objects." In May of this year, the U.S. House of Representatives held a UFO-related hearing for the first time in over 50 years, where the Department of Defense announced plans for investigation and research, stating that UFOs "could pose a threat to national security." NASA's formation of this UFO investigation team is proceeding independently from the Department of Defense.
