[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The ‘Donghaeng’ (Together) journey of Mayor Oh Se-hoon and Dongdaemun District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung seems to have started off well.

Mayor Oh showed remarkable resilience by making a comeback after 10 years following a turbulent by-election last year. He then won the recent local election, becoming the first Seoul mayor to be elected for four consecutive terms, marking a spectacular political revival.

However, Mayor Oh appears to be experiencing considerable difficulties following the announcement of the candidate site for the Mapo waste incineration plant.

Amid this, Mayor Oh kicked off his visits to the 25 autonomous districts by meeting citizens in Gangdong District.

On the 17th, Mayor Oh visited Dongdaemun District, where he was welcomed by Mayor Lee Pil-hyung and staff, held a meeting, and toured the Hongneung Bio Complex to assess local issues.

During the meeting, Mayor Oh emphasized his connection to Dongdaemun District by recalling his childhood memories of living in Jangan-dong.

In particular, Mayor Oh and Mayor Lee Pil-hyung, both alumni of Korea University, showed a special bond, with Mayor Oh visiting Dongdaemun District six times during the recent local election to appeal for support.

It is said that because of this connection, Mayor Oh’s visit to Dongdaemun District that day was a very pleasant one.

On the afternoon of the 19th around 5 p.m., Dongdaemun District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung attracted attention by posting on his Facebook page a message titled ‘Mayor Oh Se-hoon Cheered for Dongdaemun District.’

Mayor Lee wrote, “Mayor Oh visited Dongdaemun District on the 17th to accompany the autonomous district. He donated the book ‘Minority Design’ to the Chaekmadang Library in Dongdaemun and listened to voices on-site at the Hongneung Bio Hub cooperation district.”

He continued, “During the local election process, Mayor Oh paid special attention to Dongdaemun District. He proposed the complex development of Cheongnyangni Station as a core pledge, promised focused investment in the Hongneung Bio Hub as a future growth engine, and pledged to develop the Jeongneungcheon waterfront space for a pleasant urban environment.”

He also said, “Mayor Oh spent his childhood in Jangan-dong, and I grew up in Dapsimni. Our memories of urban spaces were similar. Perhaps that’s why his affection for Dongdaemun was extraordinary.” He happily added, “The ‘true gateway to the east = Dongdaemun’ that Mayor Oh emphasized was exactly the same as mine.”

Mayor Lee concluded, “Now, Dongdaemun must move toward becoming a 2050 future city. We must fill Dongdaemun with the future.”

Since taking office, Mayor Lee Pil-hyung has been praised for drastically changing the atmosphere of Dongdaemun District in the 8th local government term through his clean and efficient handling of affairs.

At the meeting that day between Mayor Oh, Mayor Lee, and the staff, Deputy Mayor Choi Hong-yeon smoothly moderated the session.
