Reviewing Whether to Comply with Search and Seizure Under Lawyer Kim Yong's Presence
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The Democratic Party of Korea criticized the prosecution’s raid on the Democratic Party headquarters in connection with Kim Yong, Deputy Director of the Democratic Research Institute, calling it a “show.” The Democratic Party decided to determine whether to comply with the search warrant for Deputy Director Kim after the lawyer completes the verification process.
On the 19th, Kim Eui-gyeom, spokesperson for the Democratic Party, said at a meeting with reporters regarding the raid on the Democratic Research Institute, “The prosecution is attempting to raid the headquarters of the main opposition party, which is an unprecedented act,” adding, “They came to the headquarters wearing hats, including at Deputy Director Kim’s residence, body, and vehicle.”
Spokesperson Kim explained, “Deputy Director Kim was appointed not long ago,” and “He was appointed on the 11th of this month, has come to the headquarters three times, and stayed for three hours in total during three one-hour regular meetings,” adding, “He has not brought any personal belongings or equipment.”
He continued, “I believe the raid on the main opposition party is a political act by the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, whose approval ratings have fallen, attempting to use it as a show to find an escape.”
Regarding the progress of the raid, he explained, “One prosecutor from the Central District Prosecutors’ Office Anti-Corruption Division 3 and eight others came with a warrant and notified the headquarters of the raid,” adding, “Since the raid must be notified in the presence of the suspect’s lawyer, they are currently contacting the lawyer to come.”
He further explained, “The first procedure is to verify the scope of the warrant,” and “Secretary-General Jo Jeong-sik and other lawmakers are deliberating on how to respond.”
