[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] Amid recent social concerns over battery explosion accidents, Shinhwa IT, a subsidiary specializing in secondary battery materials of Hansong Neotec, has completed the expansion of its lead tab factory for secondary batteries that prevents explosions and is accelerating its domestic and international market penetration.
Hansong Neotec announced on the 19th that its subsidiary Shinhwa IT has completed the expansion of the second production line for its recently self-developed high-performance lead tabs and has started full-scale mass production. With this expansion, Shinhwa IT's production capacity (CAPA) for high-performance, high-capacity lead tabs will increase fivefold compared to before.
Shinhwa IT's high-performance lead tabs are designed with metal ends processed by 'Edge' machining to prevent explosions even if other materials inside the battery expand. Compared to existing lead tabs, they have enhanced energy density and response speed by more than 30%, significantly improving battery safety. These lead tabs are mainly used in EVs (electric vehicles), ESS (energy storage systems), and more.
A Hansong Neotec official said, "This expansion is to respond to the rapidly increasing demand for lead tabs from global customers," adding, "Especially since we are conducting technology development and product supply with numerous next-generation battery companies overseas, including in the United States, sales of high-performance and high-capacity lead tabs are expected to surge in the future."
He continued, "With the expansion of the second production line, the CAPA for high-performance lead tabs has increased fivefold compared to before, enabling significant sales growth," and added, "The secondary battery materials business, including next-generation high-performance lead tabs, will firmly establish itself as the company's next growth engine."
Lead tabs are electrode terminals that connect the cathode and anode of secondary batteries to input and output electricity externally. They are essential materials used not only in lithium-ion batteries but also in next-generation secondary batteries such as lithium-sulfur, lithium-metal, and all-solid-state batteries.
According to the global market research firm QY Research, the global market size for lead tabs is currently estimated at approximately 750 billion KRW and is expected to grow at an annual average rate of over 20%, reaching a scale of 2.25 trillion KRW by 2028.
