Proposal for Jinju Silk Experience Space Creation and Development of Specialized Products

Mayor Jo Gyu-il is having a date with citizens in October.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] On the 17th, Jo Gyu-il, mayor of Jinju City, Gyeongnam Province, spent the October "Date with Citizens" time with members of the 'Jinju Sewing Cooperative' at a cafe located in Munsan-eup.

The Jinju Sewing Cooperative was established in 2020 to create value for sewing workers, develop products using Jinju Silk with a 100-year tradition, and inherit and develop the tradition of textile crafts. It is an organization with 8 active members.

The Sewing Cooperative is carrying out projects to promote silk culture, including participation in village schools for youth sewing value experience, production of sewing kits for experience using Jinju Silk, archiving traditional Jinju Silk burial garments, and developing Jinju Silk products.

On this day, members of the Jinju Sewing Cooperative proposed the creation of educational and experiential spaces to revitalize silk culture, the necessity of research, restoration, and education of traditional costumes, as well as the development of convergence products and silk storytelling products using Jinju Silk.

Mayor Jo said, "Our city spares no support and nurturing to strengthen the competitiveness of the silk industry through technological advancement and marketing diversification of the silk industry. Through the MOU signed with the Uzbekistan Silk Industry Association last July, stable supply of raw yarn has become possible. When the 'Jinju Silk Museum,' scheduled to be completed in 2023, is built, it will become a monumental space preserving the value of the only silk industry in Korea."
