Assault Scuffle Involving District Council Member and District Mayor's Associate Causes Controversy at Gwangju Chungjang Festival

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] A local district council member was involved in an assault incident at the 'Chungjang Festival,' a representative regional festival in Gwangju.

According to the police, around 9:05 PM on the 14th, in front of Chungjang-ro street in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, independent Dong-gu council member Mr. A and Choi (in his 50s), a close aide of the current district mayor, had an altercation.

The two reportedly encountered each other by chance on the street during the festival and got into a dispute, grabbing each other's collars and assaulting one another.

It is said that their feelings had been strained since before the 2020 general election.

At that time, Choi, who was active in the Democratic Party of Korea's Gwangju Dongnam-eul parliamentary candidate election camp, clashed with a female council member over his abusive behavior, and it is speculated that resentment still remains.

The police, who responded to the report, confirmed the identities of both individuals and sent them home.

Mr. A sustained minor injuries and received treatment at a hospital, and it is reported that he currently has no intention of reaching a settlement. Assault is a crime that requires the victim's consent for prosecution, so if the parties do not wish to press charges, punishment cannot be enforced.

Meanwhile, despite the issue coming to light through the media the previous day, Lee Ji-ae, Chairperson of the Dong-gu Council Ethics Special Committee and Vice Chairperson, was completely unaware of the incident itself.
