EU to Conduct Military Training for Ukrainian Forces Starting Next Month... Additional Support of 700 Billion Won

[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Kim] The European Union (EU) is expected to conduct military training for the Ukrainian forces, including the command staff, starting next month.

On the 17th (local time), the EU Foreign Affairs Council held a meeting of foreign ministers from the 27 member states in Luxembourg and announced through a statement that it had given final approval to a support plan centered on this matter.

Regarding this military training support, the EU explained, "The mission objective is to contribute to enhancing the military capabilities of the Ukrainian forces so that they can effectively carry out military operations."

The training support mission unit is planned to be headquartered within the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels, Belgium. The training locations are expected to be in Poland, Germany, and other countries near Ukraine.

The EU foreign ministers also decided on financial support amounting to 500 million euros (approximately 700 billion KRW) to assist Ukraine in purchasing weapons. With this, the total EU-level support has increased to 3.1 billion euros (4.3 trillion KRW), the EU explained.

During the meeting, the EU foreign ministers also discussed additional sanctions against Iran in response to Iranian-made drones reportedly used by Russia in the Ukraine war. However, they plan to continue further discussions on this matter.

Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, who participated in the meeting via video conference, tweeted that he "requested the EU to impose sanctions on Iran for providing drones to Russia."
