[Asia Economy Reporter Noh Kyung-jo] Samsung C&T Corporation's construction division announced on the 17th that it has obtained a Grade 1 certification for both lightweight and heavyweight impact sound insulation performance in the floor impact sound blocking performance rating conducted by a nationally accredited institution, using its new technology for reducing inter-floor noise.

The floor impact sound blocking performance rating is a system that evaluates the inter-floor noise blocking performance of floor structures in multi-family housing, conducted by the Quality Testing Accreditation Center of Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), an institution designated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Technologies that receive performance recognition can be immediately applied to actual multi-family housing sites.

The newly recognized technology features a construction method where pre-fabricated modules using high-mass floor panels and springs are assembled on-site. This differs from the conventional method of completing floor structures with a combination of cushioning materials and mortar. Inspired by vibration control technology from high-performance industrial equipment, it significantly improves impact absorption performance and, due to its modular construction method, allows for easy installation and consistent blocking performance.

Samsung C&T applied the new technology to an apartment in Seoul and requested impact sound measurement from the nationally accredited testing institution, Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL). The measurement results showed a significant improvement compared to the enhanced Grade 1 standards, recording 21 decibels (dB) for lightweight impact sound and 29 dB for heavyweight impact sound. Since August, the Grade 1 certification for floor impact sound blocking performance has been strengthened, and can only be awarded if both lightweight and heavyweight impact sound levels are 37 dB or below.

Samsung C&T plans to actively apply the new technology to remodeling apartments where it is difficult to implement inter-floor noise reduction technologies. A Samsung C&T official stated, "With the confirmation of Grade 1 inter-floor noise blocking performance and the acquisition of the official certification, we will strive to quickly apply the new technology on-site," adding, "We will continue to develop technologies and construction methods and expand exchanges with industry, academia, and research institutes to effectively solve inter-floor noise issues."
