[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] Won Hee-ryong, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, announced that he will actively support prompt and appropriate compensation for damages related to the Kakao service outage incident.
On the 16th, Minister Won posted on Facebook urging, "I hope Kakao takes an attitude of unlimited responsibility and promptly compensates for the damages."
Minister Won stated that the Kakao outage halted mobility services nationwide and disrupted the daily lives of the public, adding, "Especially for those who make a living using mobility services, this is like a bolt from the blue."
This is interpreted as pointing out the disruption faced by taxi drivers who heavily rely on KakaoT calls due to the Kakao 'blackout' incident. As of the first half of last year, drivers receiving calls through the Kakao Taxi app accounted for 92.8% of the total.
Through KakaoT, not only taxi services but also designated driver, quick delivery, and courier services are provided. Kakao Mobility, which operates KakaoT, announced that it will later provide compensation plans for taxi drivers using paid services.
This is the first time a large-scale outage has occurred in Kakao-related services since the launch of KakaoTalk in 2010.
