[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Sung-wook] Another unidentified postal item was delivered to Jeju, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. The item is reported to have been sent from Taiwan.
According to the police on the 15th, a report was received around 5:35 PM the previous day about a suspicious postal item suspected to be hazardous at a building in Goseong-ri, Seongsan-eup, Seogwipo-si, Jeju. Police who arrived at the scene controlled the surrounding area and requested support from the Marine Corps 9th Brigade.
Fire authorities, military, and police conducted radiation and biochemical substance tests on the postal item, which initially showed a positive reaction for the plague bacterium. Authorities performed detection and detailed tests using biochemical substance kits, and the final result was 'negative.'
The postal item was sealed and handed over to the Jeju Eastern Public Health Center, and further detailed examination will be conducted at the Jeju Provincial Institute of Health and Environment.
Earlier, on the 28th of last month, a resident in Jocheon-eup, Jeju, reported receiving a package containing white powder suspected to be anthrax.
The Hamdeok Police Station, in cooperation with the Marine Corps 9th Brigade and fire authorities, conducted chemical tests on the postal item, which showed a negative reaction for anthrax.
Subsequent detailed analysis by the Jeju branch of the National Forensic Service detected a powerful drug component, LSD, on a sticker attached to the postal item. LSD, a psychotropic drug, is known to have a hallucinogenic effect 100 times stronger than cocaine and 300 times stronger than methamphetamine.
The police have launched an investigation into the distribution route of the postal item. However, it is reported that the recipient of the postal item has no direct connection to LSD.
