[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Sung-wook] A mass shooting occurred on the 13th (local time) in Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina, USA, resulting in five deaths. According to local police, the suspect in this case was revealed to be a 15-year-old boy.


On the 14th (local time), Raleigh police announced that the mass shooting took place around 5 p.m. the previous day in a residential area. According to AP News and others, five innocent civilians ranging from teenagers to people in their 50s were killed in the incident.


Among them was one police officer from the Raleigh Police Department who was on duty. In addition to the deceased, another police officer was shot and injured, and a 59-year-old woman is reported to be in critical condition.


Immediately after the incident, police searched the local area and found the 15-year-old boy who had been shooting and hiding in a house, arresting him as a suspect within three hours. The suspect was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, but the cause of his critical state has not been disclosed.


According to the police investigation, the suspect first killed two people with a firearm in the residential area. Then, while moving along a walking trail, he fired shots killing three more people and injuring two others.


The motive behind the suspect's killings is not yet known. Police explained that they have not yet uncovered the motive for the shooting, including whether there was any relationship between the suspect and the victims. On the same day, Roy Cooper, Governor of North Carolina, called it a "tragic shooting incident that incites anger" and said, "No one should feel this kind of fear in this community."


President Joe Biden also expressed in a statement, "I mourn with the families who lost loved ones, thinking of the shattered communities." He mentioned, "There have been too many mass shootings in the U.S. within just five months since the Buffalo and Uvalde incidents, including those that don't even make the news," adding, "Too many families have lost spouses, parents, and children forever." Furthermore, he emphasized, "Please stop. We have mourned and prayed with too many families who have had to bear the terrible burden of these mass shootings."
