[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] U.S. President Joe Biden called on Iranian authorities to stop violence against anti-government protesters on the 14th (local time), according to major foreign media reports.

President Biden stated in a speech at Irvine Valley College in California that day, "Iran must stop the violence against its own people who are simply exercising their basic rights."

Referring to the Persian and other citizens gathered at the speech venue holding signs with phrases such as "Free Iran" and "Women, Life, Freedom," President Biden said, "Please know that we stand with the people of Iran, with the brave women of Iran."

President Biden said, "Something amazing is happening in Iran," adding, "What has awakened this time probably will not quiet down for a while."

In Iran, widespread anti-government protests have erupted since last month after it was revealed that Mahsa Amini (22), a female university student, died under unknown circumstances after being taken by police for improperly wearing a hijab. The Oslo-based human rights organization Iran Human Rights (IHR) reported that over 100 deaths have occurred so far due to the Iranian authorities' harsh crackdown. Some speculate that the actual number of deaths may be higher.
