[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyun] The nationwide women's baseball tournament created by Koo Bon-jun, chairman of LX Group, who is famous as a 'baseball enthusiast,' will open this weekend.
On the 13th, LX Group announced that it will hold the '2022 LX Cup Korea Women's Baseball Tournament' in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, starting from the 15th. The event is co-hosted with the Women's Baseball Association of Korea (WBAK). It is the only nationwide women's baseball tournament sponsored by a corporation. Approximately 1,000 players and officials from 39 teams will participate.
The LX Cup Korea Women's Baseball Tournament succeeds the 'LG Cup Korea Women's Baseball Tournament.' Although it was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be newly held after four years as LX decided to participate as a sponsor. The games will be held over the next two weeks on Saturdays and Sundays at LG Champions Park and Dream Stadium.
Chairman Koo has a deep connection with baseball. He is a graduate of the prestigious Busan Gyeongnam Middle School baseball team and was skilled enough to participate as a player in alumni baseball tournaments. He formerly served as the owner of the LG Twins baseball team and is widely known for his special love for baseball, enjoying games with acquaintances on weekends when he has no company schedule. In 2014, Chairman Koo invested 130 billion KRW to build LG Champions Park in Icheon, equipped with a second-team baseball stadium and basketball courts, supporting the development of second-team players.
An official from LX Holdings said, "We established this baseball tournament to expand the base of women's baseball in Korea and contribute to its revitalization," adding, "We will prepare to raise the status of Korean women's baseball."
