[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The Democratic Party of Korea has labeled the remarks by Jeong Jin-seok, the Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, calling for the cancellation of the denuclearization declaration as a ‘diversion tactic’ and demanded his resignation. Regarding the criticism of canceling the denuclearization declaration, they condemned it as a reckless statement that justifies North Korea’s nuclear development and threatens the ROK-U.S. alliance.

On the 12th, Ahn Ho-young, the chief spokesperson for the Democratic Party, said in a commentary, "Jeong Jin-seok’s statement that ‘the denuclearization joint declaration on the Korean Peninsula should be canceled’ is a diversionary remark to cover up pro-Japanese controversy and is not worth a moment’s consideration," adding, "It seems like an attempt to divert public attention with an unexpected claim after receiving public condemnation for his pro-Japanese remarks. I hope he does not use national security for political strife."

Spokesperson Ahn criticized, "(Jeong’s claim) that since the North does not abide by it, we do not need to either, is not only a dangerous argument that justifies North Korea’s nuclear development but also a reckless statement that threatens the ROK-U.S. alliance," and asked, "What does he intend to achieve by creating obstacles to the ROK-U.S. alliance during a security crisis phase that requires close cooperation between South Korea and the U.S.?"

He added, "The tit-for-tat confrontation of ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’ is further escalating military tensions," and said, "It is absurd as if they are now willing to engage in a nuclear development showdown."

Spokesperson Ahn attributed Jeong’s remarks to the controversy over his previous statements. He said, "It is tragic that the ruling party leader, who bears unlimited responsibility for state affairs, is pushing national security into crisis to avoid criticism against himself," and urged, "Jeong Jin-seok should stop muddying the issue with absurd claims, apologize for his pro-Japanese remarks, and step down from his position as Emergency Response Committee Chairman."

Meanwhile, Jeong Jin-seok stated, "Joseon rotted and decayed from within, and that is why it fell. Japan never went to war with the Joseon Dynasty." In relation to this, criticism of his incorrect historical understanding has been raised not only by opposition parties but also within the ruling party.
