[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Juri] A man in his 60s was fined for threatening and assaulting a designated driver with a weapon after becoming enraged and not believing the driver’s claim that he owned an apartment under his name.

On the 9th, Judge Kim Dong-jin of the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 4 sentenced Mr. A, in his 60s, to a fine of 4 million won on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (assault on a driver) and special intimidation.

In November of last year, around 10:30 p.m., Mr. A called a designated driver, Mr. B, in his 40s, in Siheung-si, Gyeonggi-do. While traveling to Mr. A’s home in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, Mr. B told Mr. A that he owned an apartment worth about 900 million won and a house under his mother’s name worth about 1.1 billion won.

Not believing Mr. B’s words, Mr. A got into an argument and threatened the driving Mr. B with a weapon. When Mr. B tried to film Mr. A’s actions with his phone, Mr. A is accused of striking the back of Mr. B’s hand with his own phone.

The court stated, “Considering that Mr. A had already received a summary order for a similar crime in June 2020 and committed another assault this time, this was taken as an unfavorable factor in sentencing,” and added, “Taking into account that the victim did not wish for punishment and that the victim’s injuries were minor, the sentence was determined comprehensively.”
