[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Volvo Cars announced on the 7th that it will equip the electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) EX90, set to be unveiled next month, with bidirectional charging functionality. This is the first time for a Volvo electric vehicle.
Bidirectional charging is a technology that enables efficient use of energy. As demand for electric vehicles increases, there is a possibility of burdening the power grid, and this technology is considered a solution to alleviate that. It can supply power needed for daily life while on the move, effectively acting as a battery on wheels.
It allows charging when power grid demand or prices are low, or conserving stored energy for use when needed. Homes can supply power to other electronic devices, and if compatible, different Volvo vehicles can support mutual charging. The entire charging process is automatically managed through an application, and an algorithm designed to charge and discharge the battery in a limited manner reduces concerns about battery performance degradation.
Olivier Rodel, Head of Electrification Ecosystem at Volvo Cars, said, "Through bidirectional charging, the battery can be used in various ways, from charging an electric bicycle when going out to connecting outdoor cooking appliances for weekend camping trips," adding, "It is also possible to supply power to the home during peak times of the day when costs are highest."
Grid support is possible depending on the energy supply and demand situation. More energy can be used when the demand for renewable energy is low, and conversely, stored energy can be sold back during peak demand times. This is expected to enhance the sustainability of the power network. To this end, Volvo plans to provide buyers of the EX90 with a wall box, a home energy management system, and the necessary tools for bidirectional charging.
