Review of Pilot Application from New Housing Construction Project Approval
The balcony is called Deotmaru, the alpha room is Deonuribang, the pantry is Ssamtjibang, the kids station is Saessak Jeongryujang, and the guest house is Gongdong Sarangchae.
Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced on the 7th that the winning entries for five words were selected as above in the contest "Please change various parts of our home into Korean," held in celebration of Hangeul Day.
This contest was held to replace frequently used foreign words in public housing such as balcony, pantry, alpha room, kids station, and guest house with Korean words in commemoration of the 576th Hangeul Day.
A total of 977 people participated in the contest, and Deotmaru, Deonuribang, Ssamtjibang, Saessak Jeongryujang, and Gongdong Sarangchae were selected as the winning entries for each word. The winning entries will be reviewed by experts related to the Korean language and used in the process of purifying foreign words used in public housing.
Furthermore, LH plans to select and utilize terms that are easy for the public to understand from among the terms submitted to this contest, in addition to the winning entries, for the foreign word purification work.
The winning entries of this contest can be found on the Hangeul Cultural Solidarity website and the "Let's Use Easy Korean" website.
Meanwhile, since August, LH has been conducting the "Foreign Word Purification Service for Public Housing" in cooperation with the Hangeul Cultural Solidarity. This service was promoted to investigate the current use of foreign words appearing in housing construction drawings, guidebooks, etc., and to replace foreign words with Korean words.
So far, over 500 foreign words have been investigated, and through expert meetings, their suitability for purification has been evaluated. The terms are being examined from various perspectives, such as whether they can fully convey the meaning and whether they have been refined before, to carry out the work of purifying foreign words into Korean.
For example, "Jendai," which is installed in bathrooms to place toiletries, is refined as "Chaseonban" in the refined word dictionary, but this means a shelf for placing tea and is judged not to match actual usage examples. Therefore, LH plans to change the word to "narrow shelf" so that anyone can understand its meaning.
An LH official said, "We are considering pilot application of the results from this contest and the service starting from the approval of new housing construction projects," and added, "We will make further efforts to ensure that Korean is widely used in public housing."
