Jeonnam Province Rolls Up Sleeves to Promote 'Respect for the Elderly' Social Atmosphere

[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province has rolled up its sleeves to spread a culture of respect for the elderly.

Jeonnam Province announced that on the 6th, it held the ‘26th Jeonnam Province Senior Citizens' Day Commemoration Event’ at Boseong Culture and Arts Center to mark October as the Month of Respect for the Elderly.

The province holds Senior Citizens' Day commemorative events annually, touring cities and counties to honor the elderly who have devoted themselves to the nation and regional development, and to promote awareness of filial piety within the community.

At the event, attended by over 500 seniors and others, the Senior Citizens' Pledge and the Charter of Respect for the Elderly were read, followed by awards for exemplary seniors and contributors to the development of senior welfare.

Jeonnam Province has secured a budget of 1.2 trillion won this year to provide a basic pension of up to 307,000 won per month. It also offers about 53,000 senior jobs to support the economic independence of the elderly.

Additionally, to strengthen elderly care, since 2016, Jeonnam has been operating the nation’s first Elderly Guardians Corps, and continues to expand personalized care services for seniors, including the distribution of companion robots utilizing smart technology.

Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, said, “We are opening a new era of great leap forward for Jeonnam on the solid foundation laid by our seniors,” adding, “We will make further efforts to ensure that our seniors, who are great teachers of our society, enjoy a healthy and happy old age.”
