[2022 National Audit] Korail Reports 74 Passenger Injuries Over 5 Years Due to Management Negligence


[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Wanyong] It has been confirmed that 74 operational accidents resulting in passenger injuries or fatalities occurred over the past five years due to poor management by Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL).


According to the "Operational Accident Occurrence Status in the Last 5 Years" data submitted by KORAIL to Seo Iljun, a member of the National Assembly Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee from the People Power Party, a total of 74 operational accidents have occurred from 2017 to the present.


By type of accident, there were 33 cases of jumping onto trains (presumed suicides), 12 cases of falling on platforms or slipping while boarding and alighting, 7 cases of falling on escalators, and 2 cases of electric shock, resulting in passenger injuries or fatalities.


Regarding the occurrence status of operational accidents by 19 nationwide lines, the Gyeongbu Line had the highest number with 26 cases, followed by the Gyeongwon Line with 9 cases, the Gyeongin Line with 8 cases, the Ansan Line with 7 cases, and the Jungang Line with 6 cases.


Assemblyman Seo Iljun stated, "Field-centered administration must be carried out to ensure that the safety and convenience of the public are not neglected."
