Yongin City Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Multi-Family Housing Construction Near University Areas

Yongin City recently produced the 'Casebook of Multi-family Housing Violations'

[Asia Economy (Yongin) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province will intensively crack down on illegal construction activities in multi-family houses, focusing on six universities in the area, to protect the housing rights of socially vulnerable groups such as young people.

To this end, Yongin City has organized an inspection team composed of the Architecture Department and the Building Permit Sections 1 and 2 of each district office, and will conduct inspections starting with Cheoin-gu, followed by Giheung-gu and Suji-gu, until May next year.

This month, the city will first inspect 137 multi-family houses around Myongji University (Building 84), Yongin University of Arts and Science (Building 14), and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Building 39) in Cheoin-gu.

From December, inspections will be conducted on 109 buildings near Kangnam University (Building 55) and Kyung Hee University (Building 54) in Giheung-gu.

In Suji-gu, 64 buildings around Dankook University are scheduled for inspection in March next year.

Before the crackdown, the city will have a guidance period encouraging building owners to voluntarily report violations. To enhance the effect of self-inspection, a casebook of illegal buildings will be distributed, and legalization consultations including guidance on enforcement fines will also be conducted.

Then, inspection teams from each district will visit sites to focus on checking whether additional installations such as mailboxes per household and electric and gas meters have been made, and will compare the building register with the actual number of households.

For houses found to have serious illegal subdivisions during the inspection, orders to restore the original state will be issued, and if not complied with, the building register will be marked as a violation, and enforcement fines will be imposed.

A city official emphasized, "Many students and young workers live in multi-family houses near universities, so we are focusing on crackdowns to prevent them from suffering damages caused by illegal buildings," adding, "We will thoroughly manage and supervise to create a residential environment where young people can live with peace of mind."
