[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Juri] A murder has occurred at Purdue University in Indiana, USA, with a Korean international student identified as the suspect. The student, enrolled at Purdue, was arrested on charges of killing their roommate inside a dormitory room.

According to major U.S. media outlets including the Today Show and police announcements on the 5th (local time), a student death presumed to be a murder occurred around 12:44 a.m. at McCutcheon Hall, one of the dormitories on Purdue University's West Lafayette campus.

The police found 20-year-old Varun Manish Cheda deceased inside a first-floor dorm room and identified the roommate, a 22-year-old Korean international student referred to as A, as the suspect. A was arrested and is currently under investigation.

According to the police, A directly called 911 to report Cheda's death.

A, an international student from Korea, is known to be a junior majoring in Cybersecurity. The Associated Press reported that A is from Seoul.

The deceased, Cheda, was a senior majoring in Data Science, and A and Cheda had been sharing a double dorm room.

The medical examiner who conducted the autopsy stated that Cheda died from multiple sharp force injuries and the death is presumed to be a homicide.

Leslie Witt, head of Purdue University police, said, "It appears to be a reckless and one-sided attack," adding, "Investigations are ongoing to clarify the motive and circumstances of the incident."

Meanwhile, local media Indianapolis Star reported, "The deceased Cheda was a promising student who graduated with honors from Park Tudor School, a private high school in Indianapolis in 2020, and entered Purdue University," noting that the local community is deeply shocked.

Mitch Daniels, president of Purdue University, expressed, "The worst tragedy has occurred," offering condolences to the bereaved families and all affected by this disaster, and stated that mental health counseling will be provided to students.
