“Is the tiger thought to be extinct in the Eoryeong-gun Hanusan Silver Grass Forest?”

Tiger Folklore Birthplace 'Hanusan' Folklore Park Features Tiger Sculpture, Observatory, and Forest Trail

“Is the tiger thought to be extinct in the Eoryeong-gun Hanusan Silver Grass Forest?” A sculpture of the Uiryeong Hanusan tiger family peacefully resting inside a cave.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Wook] On the 5th, Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam, completed the creation of the so-called ‘Tiger Folklore Garden,’ a ‘Goblin Making Project Visiting the Tiger’s Resting Place’ at Hanusan Folklore Garden, where countless ‘tiger legends’ were born, arousing curiosity and enticing visitors.

This project is a tourism infrastructure development initiative that leverages the characteristics of Hanusan by linking it with the existing Hanusan Ecological Forest Goblin Folklore Garden. The construction, which took one year with a budget of 1.5 billion KRW, was recently completed.

Since ancient times, many tiger-related legends have been passed down in Hanusan and Jagulsan, such as the Tiger Mother Stone Rubble, the tiger’s love for its offspring, and the tiger that repaid kindness. It is said that tigers actually appeared in Hanusan until the Japanese colonial period.

In the Tiger Folklore Garden, the story depicts a Baekdusan tiger descending to Hanusan to give birth to cubs, and the cubs growing up with the help of Hanusan’s goblin ‘Soemoki.’

The Tiger Folklore Garden project restructured the tiger and goblin stories to create a storyline linked to the existing goblin folklore, and changed the character designs. As a result, 12 sculptures were installed, and a 230m-long observatory and deck, as well as a 200m forest trail, were completed.

A county official said, “The Tiger Folklore Garden, where silver grass and tiger sculptures harmonize, allows visitors to fully enjoy the autumn atmosphere. Together with the already established Goblin Folklore Garden, it is expected to become a unique ecological tourism attraction.”
