Spike Together Even for Beginners! ... Busan Sports Council Hosts 'Beginner Volleyball Tournament'

Spike Together Even for Beginners! ... Busan Sports Council Hosts 'Beginner Volleyball Tournament' Participants of the 'Beginner' volleyball tournament are taking a group commemorative photo.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] The Busan Sports Council, which planned the ‘Beginner’ tournament, held the final volleyball competition on the 3rd at the main gymnasium of Gijang Sports Center, following the archery and park golf events.

The Beginner tournament aims to provide sports participation opportunities to unregistered club members who exercise without registering with a team and to those who have been exercising for less than three years. It seeks to increase interest in exercise and encourage continuous sports activities and healthy leisure lifestyles.

The tournament saw the participation of 501 club members from 38 clubs.

Unlike the individual events of archery and park golf held earlier in the Beginner tournament, volleyball is a team sport. To maximize participation opportunities for beginner players, the matches were conducted with a format requiring at least five of the nine players on the court to be beginners.

A participant, Mr. A, said, “I joined the Beginner tournament on the recommendation of an acquaintance. It was the first time in 10 years that I played volleyball, so it felt awkward at first, but it became a positive energy that made me realize I could be active again, which was great.”

An association official said, “Due to COVID-19 and the nature of volleyball, it was a dark period as we couldn’t play for 2 to 3 years. This year, with some easing, we have been able to hold various tournaments, and especially with the Beginner tournament for novice players, it seems we have rekindled the flame for revitalizing the sport, which makes me happy.”

He added, “I hope the Beginner tournament will serve as an opportunity to lower the entry barriers of typical tournaments that only high-level players participate in, so that unregistered and beginner players can all enjoy sports together.”

The Busan Sports Council plans to continuously promote various tournaments and support projects for the development and revitalization of sports.
