Opposition Committee Against the Relocation of Muan Combat Airfield: "Unilateral Relocation Push is Illegal"

[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] The Anti-Military Airport Pan-Citizen Countermeasure Committee has once again united to oppose the unilateral relocation of the Gwangju military airport to Muan.

The Anti-Military Airport Pan-Citizen Countermeasure Committee against the relocation of the Gwangju Combat Airfield to Muan (hereinafter referred to as the Committee) held a regular meeting on the 30th of last month at the second-floor conference room of the Namak Complex Community Center in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do.

At the meeting, about ten members including the Committee's standing committee members discussed response measures after recalculating the project cost for relocating the Gwangju military airport, reaffirming their determination to block the relocation of the combat airfield.

At the meeting, Park Moon-jae, Co-Chairman of the Standing Committee, emphasized, "The basis for relocating a military airport is the acceptance of the residents in the relocation area, and the law clearly states that when selecting a preliminary relocation candidate site, consultation with the heads of the relevant local governments must be conducted."

He continued, "If a preliminary relocation candidate site is selected unilaterally, it is a clear illegal act, and we will hold those responsible accountable. We will do everything possible, including large-scale resolution rallies involving military residents and solidarity with neighboring areas such as Goheung and Haenam, to block the military airport relocation according to future circumstances," he said emphatically.

Park Il-sang, General Director, stressed, "We need to stop unnecessary disputes that cause conflicts between local governments and change to a public contest method to find areas that want the military airport relocation."

Meanwhile, in Muan-gun, following recent reports related to preliminary relocation candidate sites, the atmosphere opposing the military airport relocation is intensifying with the entire population united, including relay resolution rallies in towns and townships opposing the relocation and the formation of a special committee in the council against the military airport relocation.
