[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Due to heavy rain continuing from the 3rd to the early morning of the 4th, many areas in the Seoul metropolitan area recorded the highest daily rainfall for October.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, until the morning of the 4th, strong rain accompanied by gusts and thunder/lightning with an hourly rainfall of around 20-30mm will fall mainly in the southern Chungcheong region, Jeolla region, and northern inland Gyeongbuk. As the rain cloud band moves from northwest to southeast, rain will fall in most parts of the country until the morning, and Jeju Island will experience occasional rain from morning to afternoon.
Expected rainfall on the 4th is over 80mm in Gangwon Yeongdong, 20-60mm in southern Chungcheong, Jeolla, mountainous areas of Jeju Island, northern coastal Gyeongbuk (until the morning of the 5th), and Gangwon Yeongdong (until the 5th), and 5-30mm in northern Chungnam, Gyeongnam, Jeju Island (excluding mountainous areas), Ulleungdo, and Dokdo. Until the early morning of the 5th, 5-30mm of rain will fall in southwestern Gangwon Yeongseo, northern Chungbuk, and Gyeongbuk, while less than 5mm of rain is expected in the Seoul metropolitan area and central to northern Gangwon Yeongseo.
Warm air flowing into Korea and cold air moving southward from the northwest collided, causing heavy rain mainly in the central region from the 3rd to the early morning of the 4th. As a low-pressure system passed through the central region, over 100mm of rain fell with hourly rainfall of around 30-50mm in the Seoul metropolitan area, western Gangwon, and Chungcheong region, breaking records for the highest hourly and daily rainfall in many areas.
