[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] Samsung SDI has declared 'eco-friendly management' to actively participate in overcoming the global crisis by deeply recognizing the seriousness of climate change and environmental emergencies as a global eco-friendly energy and materials company.
On the 3rd, Samsung SDI announced this declaration of 'eco-friendly management' and revealed detailed strategic tasks.
First, Samsung SDI plans to gradually use renewable energy at all domestic and overseas business sites by 2050. To this end, it will increase the proportion of renewable energy use starting from overseas sites such as Hungary, Tianjin, and Malaysia. In particular, Samsung SDI recently announced that it has joined the RE100 initiative.
RE100 is an international campaign in which companies commit to sourcing 100% of their electricity from renewable energy such as wind and solar power by 2050. Samsung SDI also plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by LNG use by replacing liquefied natural gas (LNG) boilers with electric boilers.
Samsung SDI will also expand carbon footprint certified products. The company plans to strengthen internal capabilities for calculating carbon footprints and continuously expand carbon footprint certified products by reducing carbon emissions generated from battery manufacturing to disposal. Additionally, by 2030, Samsung SDI will gradually convert company business vehicles to zero-emission electric vehicles and expand charging infrastructure.

Samsung SDI also intends to focus on minimizing environmental impacts caused by waste batteries as electric vehicle adoption expands. The company aims to continuously increase the recycling rate of key battery raw materials through battery recycling. Samsung SDI plans to expand and establish a closed-loop system that recovers key raw materials from waste generated in the production line and recycles them in battery manufacturing at all global production bases by 2025.
Furthermore, the company added that it established a 'Recycling Research Lab' within its research center in May this year to develop eco-friendly material recovery technologies. It also plans to expand recycling of various wastes generated at business sites and fundamentally minimize waste generation. In addition, Samsung SDI will strengthen water resource management and minimize the use of disposable products.
Yoonho Choi, President of Samsung SDI, emphasized, "Eco-friendly management is a social responsibility that companies must fulfill for future generations and a core competitive capability in corporate management that Samsung SDI must have to become a global top-tier company by 2030."
