Boseong-gun Successfully Concludes the 24th Seopyeonje Boseong Sound Festival

[Boseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Cheon-seok] Jeonnam Boseong-gun announced that the ‘24th Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival’ successfully concluded on the 2nd.

This Sori Festival was held for three days from September 30 to October 2 at the Boseong Culture and Arts Center area.

Unlike last year’s audience-free competition held due to the COVID-19 situation, this year’s festival was held with an audience, and a total of 220 participants engaged in a passionate sound battle.

The grand prize in the master singer category, the highlight of the Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival, was awarded to Ms. Lee Eun-sook (52 years old, female), who received a trophy and a prize money of 40 million won. In the master drummer category of the goso competition, which awards the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Prize, Ms. Jo In-kyung (29 years old, female) won the prize money of 10 million won.

Ms. Lee Eun-sook, who won the presidential award, performed ‘Mrs. Kwak’s Last Words’ from the Simcheongga during the national pansori and goso competition master singer finals at this festival, and also had the honor of winning the newly introduced Audience Evaluation Popularity Award.

The ‘24th Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival’ began on September 30 with a memorial ceremony honoring master singers who preserved the legacy of Boseong Sori and nurtured disciples at the Pansori Sacred Site located in Hoecheon-myeon, followed by a nationwide pansori competition, goso competition, and various traditional Korean music performances.

In particular, for local residents and tourists who could not visit the event venue, eight sessions of traditional Korean music busking were held around Boseong Station and Beolgyo Station during the festival period, providing an opportunity to experience the beauty of our traditional sounds in daily life.

Honorary Chairman Jo Sang-hyun said, “I will devote myself to passing down our sound through nurturing disciples,” and added, “I will work hard so that more people can enjoy Boseong Sori and to popularize pansori.”

Boseong County Governor Kim Cheol-woo stated, “Boseong is the hometown of Seopyeonje Boseong Sori and holds a special responsibility and mission to inherit the legacy of pansori and develop traditional culture,” and added, “When people think of pansori, Boseong naturally comes to mind, and we will do our best so that many people can enjoy and love the charm and elegance of our sound.”

Meanwhile, this Sori Festival not only awarded first to third place in each final category but also newly established encouragement awards for elementary and middle school pansori divisions to boost the morale of young pansori hopefuls, and thoroughly managed quarantine measures to ensure safe viewing of the competition for participants and spectators alike.
