Yoo So-yeon "Fighting Alone at Tied 7th"... Korea Faces '11 Consecutive Tournaments Without Victory' Drought

[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] Veteran Yoo So-yeon (32, photo) has entered the 'Top 10'.

On the 2nd (local time), Yoo So-yeon added 2-under par on the final day at the Ascendant LPGA Benefiting Volunteers of America (total prize money $1.7 million) held at Old American Golf Club (par 71, 6,517 yards) in The Colony, Texas, USA. She tied for 7th place (10-under par 274) along with Lizette Salas (USA). This is her second 'Top 10' finish of the season since tying for 8th at the major Amundi Evian Championship in July.

Starting from a tie for 6th place, 3 strokes behind, Yoo So-yeon recorded 4 birdies and 2 bogeys. She gained momentum with consecutive birdies on holes 1 and 2 but lost all the strokes she had gained by bogeys on holes 3 and 9. She added 2 more birdies on holes 14 and 17 but there were not enough holes left to make a comeback. Her long drives averaged 261 yards, and she stood out with 28 putts. However, she missed the green 8 times, making it difficult to create birdie opportunities.

Korea has failed to win 11 consecutive tournaments on the LPGA Tour. Since Jeon In-ji (28) won the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship at the end of June, no Korean player has reached the top spot. This is the first time in 8 years since the streak of 17 consecutive tournaments without a Korean winner from October 2013 to June 2014 that Korea has failed to win 10 or more consecutive LPGA Tour events.

Charlie Hull (England) surged with a 7-under par round to clinch a 1-stroke come-from-behind victory (18-under par 266). This is her second career win in 6 years since the CME Group Tour Championship in November 2016, with a winner's prize of $255,000 (360 million KRW). Lin Xiyu (China) finished 2nd (17-under par 267), Lydia Ko 3rd (16-under par 268), and 'Rookie No.1' Atthaya Thitikul (Thailand) placed 4th (12-under par 272). For Korea, Kim Ah-rim (27) tied for 11th (7-under par 277), and Hong Ye-eun (20) tied for 29th (3-under par 281).
