[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is launching a focused crackdown on illegal fishing activities.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 2nd that it will conduct a joint crackdown on illegal fishing activities in the Gyeonggi coastal waters during the autumn season from the 4th to the 29th.
This inspection aims to prevent fishing safety accidents and establish a sound fishing culture during the peak autumn season.
The main targets of the crackdown are ▲ violations of fishing restrictions ▲ failure to wear life jackets ▲ boarding beyond capacity ▲ illegal fishing activities within fishing control zones.
The focused crackdown areas include the coastal areas of Hwaseong, Ansan, Siheung, and Pyeongtaek, as well as Oido and the Siwha Lake area, which are designated as fishing control zones under the "Fishing Management and Promotion Act." Illegal fishing activities will be jointly cracked down on with local governments and the Coast Guard.
The province will impose penalties of up to one year imprisonment or fines up to 10 million won according to the "Fishing Management and Promotion Act" and the "Water Leisure Safety Act" for violations.
Kim Seong-gon, Director of the Marine Fisheries Division of the province, explained, "Through joint crackdowns, we plan to eradicate illegal activities and do our best to prevent safety accidents so that people can fish safely in the Gyeonggi coastal waters."
