[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the North Sumatra region of Indonesia on the 1st (local time), resulting in one death.
According to the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the strong earthquake occurred at 2:28 a.m. in North Tapanuli Regency on Sumatra Island, 15 km west of the epicenter. Following this earthquake, 53 aftershocks were recorded.
BMKG reported that one person died, nine were injured, and residents evacuated urgently due to the earthquake.
The Indonesian daily Kompas reported that dozens were injured, emergency tents were set up as the regional general hospital emergency room was filled with the injured. It also reported that many houses, school buildings, and terminals were damaged by the earthquake.
Bongas Basaribu, head of the North Tapanuli Regency Disaster Management Agency, explained that the deceased appeared to have fallen while going down from the second floor to the first floor of a house when the earthquake occurred.
