[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] As the COVID-19 resurgence subsides, the number of new confirmed cases has remained in the 20,000 range for two consecutive days.


The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on the 1st, the number of new COVID-19 cases increased by 26,960, bringing the total to 24,790,614.


The number of new confirmed cases on this day was 1,537 fewer than the previous day (28,497 cases).


Compared to a week ago on the 24th (29,336 cases), it decreased by 2,376, and compared to two weeks ago on the 17th (43,436 cases), it dropped by 16,476.


Based on Saturday announcements, this is the lowest number in 12 weeks since the early resurgence on July 9th (20,261 cases).


From the 25th to this day, the daily new confirmed cases for one week were 25,772 → 14,154 → 39,410 → 36,139 → 30,864 → 28,497 → 26,960, averaging 28,828 cases per day.


Among the new confirmed cases on this day, 301 were imported cases, 25 more than the previous day (276). Excluding imported cases, domestic regional infections numbered 26,659.


The number of confirmed cases by region (including imported cases) were: Gyeonggi 7,837, Seoul 5,584, Incheon 1,570, Daegu 1,251, Gyeongnam 1,531, Gyeongbuk 1,299, Busan 1,317, Chungnam 145, Chungbuk 823, Gangwon 900, Jeonbuk 795, Jeonnam 720, Daejeon 751, Gwangju 618, Ulsan 454, Sejong 222, Jeju 208, and quarantine 35.


As of midnight on this day, the number of critically ill patients in care was 356, an increase of 4 from the previous day (352).


The number of deaths due to COVID-19 on the previous day was 39, three fewer than the day before.


Among the new deaths, 21 (53.9%) were aged 80 and above, 12 were in their 70s, and 3 each were in their 60s and 50s.


The critical care bed occupancy rate was 20.1% (369 out of 1,839 beds in use), and as of midnight on this day, 175,897 confirmed patients were under home treatment.


As the COVID-19 resurgence subsides, the authorities decided to lift the mandatory PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test within one day after entry starting today. With this, all COVID-19 quarantine measures related to domestic entry have been removed.


The government also decided to allow contact visits again from the 4th at infection-vulnerable facilities such as nursing hospitals and care facilities.
