A Special Exhibition Depicting Life After the '9·28 Seoul Liberation'... Theme: 'Seoul Yongsan: From Reconstruction to Leap'

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 2nd that it will hold an exhibition under the theme "Seoul Yongsan: From Reconstruction to Leap," highlighting the lives of Seoul citizens from the liberation of Seoul on September 28, 1950, through to 1960.

At the Yongsan Urban Memory Exhibition Hall, operated by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the exhibition titled "Seoul Yongsan: From Reconstruction to Leap" is composed of 143 photographs and 19 videos collected from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The main content of the exhibition allows visitors to observe the daily lives of citizens in Seoul and the Yongsan area after the liberation of Seoul.

This exhibition is the second planned exhibition following the 2021 special exhibition "July 16, Yongsan," covering the lives of Seoul citizens from the liberation of Seoul on September 28, 1950, through to 1960. Visitors can see leaflets that citizens returning to Seoul in 1950 would have seen, efforts to improve the urban environment from after the 1953 armistice agreement through the 1960s, and photographs capturing the entire area of Yongsan Ichon-dong and the South Post of the Yongsan U.S. military base in the 1960s.

The "Seoul Yongsan: From Reconstruction to Leap" exhibition is organized into three themes: immediately after the liberation on September 28, 1950, the lives of citizens after liberation, and the urban landscape after 1953. The exhibition is free for all visitors and can be seen in the "Memory Room" on the first floor of the Yongsan Urban Memory Exhibition Hall.

On the second floor of the exhibition hall, the "Archive Room" offers free access to photos, videos, and documents related to the Yongsan base, collected by a group of experts on the Yongsan base.

Hong Seon-gi, Director of Future Space Planning at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, said, "This exhibition is a valuable opportunity to see the appearance of Seoul and Yongsan and the lives of citizens after the liberation of Seoul on September 28, 1950." He added, "The Yongsan Urban Memory Exhibition Hall will continue to be a communication space where citizens can envision the future urban landscape of Seoul through various stories captured in photos and videos from Yongsan's past to the present."
