300mm Silicon Wafer 2 Trillion KRW and 300 Billion KRW Investment Attraction
Siltrom Board Decides on 900 Billion KRW Scale Investment in Gumi
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Gumi City, Gyeongbuk Province, officially announced on September 29 that it has "successfully attracted additional investment in the SK Siltron semiconductor wafer sector!"
On the 29th, SK Siltron held a board meeting and approved an investment budget of 855 billion KRW to expand 300mm (12-inch) silicon wafers, and stated that it will consider an additional investment of 400 billion KRW in the first half of next year, taking future management conditions into account.
As a result, Gumi City succeeded in attracting a total investment of 2.3 trillion KRW in the SK Siltron semiconductor wafer sector this year.
SK Siltron is one of the leading global companies manufacturing silicon wafers, a core component of semiconductors. Since 2020, it has entered the silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor wafer market, expanding its business into next-generation sectors responding to the spread and expansion of electric vehicles and 5G.
Currently, SK Siltron possesses the best domestic technology in the semiconductor core materials manufacturing field. Earlier this year, it was selected as a "SoBuJang (materials, parts, and equipment) Top Company" by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, recognizing its future growth potential and industrial competitiveness, while steadily growing as a global top company.
The city is the only non-capital region city with a complete semiconductor supply chain from raw materials and parts to demand companies (housing 123 semiconductor-related companies). It enables rapid large-scale investment utilizing the Gumi National 5 Industrial Complex (Phase 2). It is equipped with abundant industrial water essential for semiconductor production (daily supply of 43,000㎥, utilization rate 23%) and stable power supply (energy center under construction in the 5th Industrial Complex, 2023?2025). Located in the center of the country and 20 minutes from the planned integrated new airport site, it also secures logistics competitiveness.
Additionally, the city is continuously expanding semiconductor industry infrastructure through projects such as the "High-purity Industrial Water (Ultrapure Water) Demonstration Plant Construction," "Software-based Intelligent SoC Modular Support," "Artificial Graphite Testbed for Semiconductor and Secondary Battery Parts," "Hologram-based Measurement and Inspection Demonstration Project," and "Semiconductor Convergence Parts Innovative Manufacturing Platform Construction."
Kim Jang-ho, Mayor of Gumi City, said, "I thank CEO Jang Yong-ho of SK Siltron for deciding to invest for regional coexistence and development. Through this large-scale additional investment attraction in the semiconductor sector, Gumi City has gained another opportunity to grow as a global semiconductor production mecca."
He added, "In particular, the continuous investment by semiconductor companies in Gumi proves the necessity for the Gumi Industrial Complex to be designated as a semiconductor-specialized complex. To this end, we will mobilize all administrative power to support stable investment by companies in Gumi," expressing his thoughts on the successful investment attraction.
