Resident Natural Environment Guides Provide Ecological Interpretation of Wetland Plants
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] As part of welcoming guests for the National Sports Festival and the National Para Games, the "Silver Grass Ecological Observation Center" will be operated to promote Taehwagang River's representative autumn ecological tourism resource.
Ulsan City and the Taehwagang Ecotourism Council will conduct a wetland plant ecological interpretation program at Taehwagang from October 1 to November 14, daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Natural environment interpreters will provide ecological explanations of the river wetland plants for visitors to the silver grass colony and share the history of the large-scale silver grass planting and management that began in 2006.
The program includes an experience of blowing soap bubbles on silver grass stems, a quiz session with souvenirs, and a popular photo spot set against the backdrop of the silver grass colony.
Anyone interested in ecological interpretation can apply, and participation is free of charge. Applications can be made by phone at the Taehwagang Exploration Information Center before visiting.
A city official said, "As an ecotourism site designated by the Ministry of Environment, Taehwagang's representative ecological tourism resources include wild mustard flowers in spring, Chinese tallow tree flowers in summer, and the 'silver grass colony' in autumn and winter," adding, "We hope that the National Sports Festival will serve as an opportunity for the Taehwagang silver grass colony to become known as the nation's top ecological tourism destination."
The Taehwagang estuary silver grass colony was established in 2006 over an area of approximately 215,800 square meters. Due to its easy accessibility and the spectacular scenery created by the large-scale silver grass colony, it is known as a popular spot for dating, walking, and photography.
Silver grass (scientific name: Miscanthus sacchariflorus (Maxim.) Hack., English name Amur silver grass) is a grass family plant similar to Eulssae (Korean silver grass).
While Eulssae grows in dry soil, silver grass grows in moist wetlands and is a perennial plant with long hairs on its nodes. Its leaves are broader and softer compared to Eulssae. Eulssae has awns (appendages attached to the flower cluster ends) at the fruit tips, whereas silver grass does not.
